IIMC Celebrates Milestone 57th Convocation Ceremony in New Delhi
The 57th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) unfolded today at its New Delhi campus, marking a historic moment as it was the first convocation for the graduating batch since IIMC was granted deemed-to-be-university status in January 2024. The event was graced by the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, who also laid the foundation stone for a new academic block, signifying a significant expansion of the institute’s infrastructure.
Vice President Emphasizes the Role of Journalism
During his address at the ceremony, Vice President Radhakrishnan highlighted the dual responsibilities of journalism. He stressed that, while it is crucial for journalists to face challenges head-on, it is equally important to showcase progress and nation-building efforts. As he spoke to graduates from Journalism, Advertising, and Public Relations, he remarked that effective communicators have the power to shape aspirations and amplify national priorities.
The Vice President encouraged the students to view creativity not just as a commercial asset but as a transformative force for social change. He underscored the importance of core journalistic values—including accuracy, fairness, integrity, and accountability—reminding the graduates that these principles must remain unwavering as technology and platforms evolve. He called upon the new graduates to engage in purpose-driven communication to foster a confident and inclusive India.
Union Minister Announces New Initiatives
In addressing the gathering, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & IT, and Railways, praised IIMC as one of India’s premier institutions, known for its impressive placement rate and the high demand for its graduates in the media industry. He revealed plans for a new Fellowship Programme to commence in the next academic session, aimed at journalists specializing in technology, the economy, and strategy to enhance their research and expertise.
The Minister also discussed the establishment of an incubator at IIMC, recognizing innovative startups, including initiatives that convert Indian folk tales into technology-driven storytelling formats. He emphasized the vital role of what he termed “Gen Bharat”—a generation poised to contribute significantly to India’s future.
A Historic Graduation
During the ceremony, diplomas were awarded to 509 students across nine PG Diploma programs from six campuses. A total of 35 medals, including 23 with cash prizes, were presented to the top-performing graduates, celebrating their academic achievements. Furthermore, mark sheets utilizing the grade and credit system are now accessible through DigiLocker, enhancing the graduation experience.
IIMC offers eight PG Diploma programs and several MA courses, with plans to introduce three new MA programs starting in the 2026-27 academic year, ensuring that the institute continues to adapt and thrive in the changing landscape of communication.
