Government Approves Railway Multitracking Initiative to Expand Network Capacity by 307 km
The Union Cabinet has given the green light to three significant railway multitracking projects, totaling an investment of Rs 9,072 crore. These initiatives aim to enhance network capacity and alleviate congestion in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The projects, which include the Gondia–Jabalpur doubling, the Punarakh–Kiul third and fourth line, and the Gamharia–Chandil third and fourth line, are expected to add approximately 307 kilometers to the Indian Railways network and are slated for completion by 2030-31.
Project Overview and Benefits
The approved railway projects will span eight districts and improve connectivity for around 5,407 villages, benefiting nearly 98 lakh residents. The multitracking expansion is designed to enhance line capacity, operational efficiency, and service reliability by reducing congestion on critical freight and passenger routes. According to the cabinet’s statement, the increased line capacity will significantly boost mobility, thereby improving the overall efficiency and reliability of Indian Railways. This initiative is part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes integrated infrastructure planning and multimodal logistics connectivity.
Impact on Tourism and Freight Transport
The upgraded railway corridors are expected to improve access to several tourist attractions, including the Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur, Kanha and Pench national parks, and various scenic spots like Dhuandhar waterfall and Bargi Dam. These routes are vital for transporting essential commodities such as coal, steel, iron ore, cement, fertilizers, limestone, food grains, and petroleum products. The capacity augmentation is projected to facilitate an additional freight movement of approximately 52 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), thereby enhancing the efficiency of goods transportation across the regions.
Environmental and Economic Implications
The government has highlighted that the railway expansion will contribute to climate and logistics objectives by decreasing reliance on road transport. The projects are anticipated to save around 6 crore liters of oil and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 30 crore kilograms, which is equivalent to planting about one crore trees. This initiative aligns with the broader vision of promoting a self-reliant India while supporting sustainable development goals.
