India and Brazil Engage in Talks Following US Supreme Court’s Decision on Reciprocal Tariffs
India and Brazil have taken significant steps to enhance their bilateral relations, aiming to boost trade to $30 billion annually by 2030. During a meeting in the Indian capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed a crucial cooperation agreement focused on critical minerals. The discussions also addressed the recent US Supreme Court ruling that overturned reciprocal tariffs, prompting both nations to closely monitor the evolving trade landscape.
Trade Target Reset, Strategic Sectors in Focus
In their discussions, Modi and Lula set an ambitious target to double bilateral trade to $30 billion by 2030. Currently, trade between India and Brazil stands at approximately $12 billion, with Indian exports totaling $6.77 billion and imports at $5.43 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25. Modi emphasized Brazil’s importance as India’s largest trading partner in Latin America, stating that their trade figures reflect a deep trust between the two nations. Following their talks, the leaders signed nine agreements, which included cooperation in rare earth and critical minerals, as well as a joint declaration on digital partnership. They also established memoranda of understanding in various sectors, including mining, healthcare, and traditional knowledge systems. The leaders agreed to enhance collaboration in defense, energy, healthcare, and digital public infrastructure, aiming for stronger coordination to navigate geopolitical uncertainties. Modi highlighted that the agreement on critical minerals is a vital step towards building resilient supply chains.
Global South Cooperation and Security Focus
Modi and Lula underscored their shared perspectives on global governance and security challenges, advocating for the reform of international institutions to address contemporary issues. Modi stated that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts, while both leaders condemned terrorism, asserting that it should not be associated with any religion or nationality. Lula, who is visiting India for five days to attend the AI Impact Summit, condemned recent terror attacks in Kashmir. He emphasized the need for India and Brazil to strengthen their strategic ties in light of the turbulent global environment, describing their partnership as one of “superlatives.” Lula also called for reform of global institutions, particularly the UN Security Council, to better represent the interests of the Global South, positioning Brazil and India as natural candidates for permanent membership.
Expanding Cooperation Across Sectors
The discussions between Modi and Lula also encompassed defense cooperation, particularly regarding the maintenance of French-origin Scorpene submarines through a tripartite arrangement involving the Indian and Brazilian navies. Additionally, they explored Brazilian aerospace company Embraer’s proposal to establish an assembly line for its E175 regional jet in India, along with the creation of a maintenance and repair facility. Modi noted that cooperation in technology and innovation would benefit both nations and the broader Global South. He highlighted the importance of inclusive technology, mentioning areas such as Artificial Intelligence, supercomputers, semiconductors, and blockchain. Energy cooperation was identified as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship, with discussions on renewable energy, ethanol blending, and sustainable aviation fuel. Brazil’s participation in the Global Biofuel Alliance was also welcomed. Furthermore, Brazil proposed co-chairing the India-backed Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), an initiative aimed at strengthening global cooperation in disaster resilience. Modi concluded that Lula’s visit has revitalized India-Brazil relations, reinforcing their influential role on the global stage and advancing the aspirations of the Global South.
