India Gears Up for Commonwealth Games 2030 with National Cycling Event

The countdown to the Commonwealth Games 2030 is officially underway as India clinches the rights to host this prestigious event in Ahmedabad. To celebrate this achievement, the 62nd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle will take place across the nation on February 22, 2026. This event is organized in collaboration with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which is also marking its 75th anniversary of service and social security. The celebration not only emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle but also aligns with India’s broader ambitions in sports.

Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Fit India Movement aims to foster a healthier and more active nation. It dovetails with the Indian government’s vision to transform the country into a sports powerhouse by 2047. With the Commonwealth Games returning to India after 20 years, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, remarked, “This is a moment of pride for every Indian. The government is committed to establishing a sustainable ecosystem for sports, focusing on infrastructure development, talent identification, and athlete nurturing.” Additionally, India has aspirations to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

The government’s vision extends beyond merely hosting the Commonwealth Games; it aims to enhance urban infrastructure and mobility systems in preparation for future mega sporting events. According to international sports authorities, India’s strategic approach emphasizes linking these events with improvements in city planning and infrastructure, which is key to ensuring a successful hosting experience.

As part of the Fit India Sundays initiative, Dr. Mandaviya will lead a large group of cyclists from the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on the event day, alongside renowned athletes like Olympic bronze medallist Rupinder Pal Singh and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Rohit Tokas. To encourage participation from diverse age groups, the event will feature dedicated zones for yoga, rope-skipping, and Zumba.

Rupinder Pal Singh, a skilled member of India’s hockey team, has an impressive array of achievements, including medals from the Asian Games and Olympic Games. Meanwhile, Rohit Tokas is making strides in the boxing realm, while also nurturing young talent through his boxing club.

Fit India Sundays attracts broad participation from various sectors, including personnel from the Indian Army and public sector undertakings. The event has also received endorsements from prominent sportspersons and celebrities, further amplifying the reach of this fitness movement.

This initiative is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in partnership with several national sports federations and organizations. Cycling events will occur simultaneously in all states and union territories, including various sports training centers, enhancing the movement’s impact and engagement.
