DST Advances Research Initiatives to Protect Himalayan Ecosystem

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is actively promoting various research and development (R&D) programs aimed at safeguarding the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Under the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE), the DST has set up State Climate Change Centres (SCCCs) across 13 States and Union Territories in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). Additionally, the department has created three Centres of Excellence at prominent institutions—including the University of Kashmir, Sikkim University, and Tezpur University.

Comprehensive R&D Efforts

To further its mission, the DST is backing 10 major R&D projects, along with six thematic task forces and state network programs aimed at conducting extensive research. These initiatives focus on addressing the myriad challenges faced by the Himalayan ecosystem, especially those related to climate change and adaptation strategies. By coordinating efforts across multiple disciplines, these projects aim to foster sustainable development in the region.

Strengthening Local Capacities

The SCCCs, operational in all 13 states and union territories of the IHR, have been revitalized to support local governments in conducting vulnerability assessments and risk evaluations. They play a crucial role in public awareness and capacity-building efforts related to various climatic challenges. Each centre has been strategically connected with a network of experts and agencies, targeting specific areas such as disaster risk reduction, Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) assessments, and sustainable water resource management.

A Glimpse at Significant Projects

The R&D programs encompass a wide range of projects aimed at understanding and mitigating the impact of climate change on natural resources and livelihoods in the Himalayan region. Some notable projects include:

  • Assessment of Climate Change Impact: A project focusing on the natural resources and livelihoods of Arunachal Pradesh, hosted by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology.
  • Sustainable Hydrological Resources: Conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, this project studies glacial dynamics in Arunachal Himalaya.
  • Socio-Ecological Vulnerability Assessment: Targeting agroforestry managers in the Eastern Himalayas, this research is hosted by Assam University.
  • Long-Term Ecological Monitoring: Mizoram University is spearheading efforts to monitor forest plots in Northeast India.
  • Climate Resilient Agri-Systems: This initiative aims to develop sustainable agricultural practices in Ladakh, creating vital food security options for local farmers.

These projects not only emphasize the need for research in sustainable practices but also highlight the urgency of proactive measures to protect the Himalayas from the ongoing impacts of climate change. This information was presented by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, during a session in the Rajya Sabha on February 12, 2026.
