Government Reveals Latest Data on IAS, IPS, and IFS Recruitment

The Indian government has published significant data regarding vacancies and appointments within the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) for the upcoming year. As of January 1, 2025, a total of 6,877 sanctioned posts across these three services show an encouraging trend toward filling both current vacancies and promoting diversity with recent appointees.

Current Vacancies by Service

The latest records reveal that there are a total of 1,300 vacancies in the IAS, 505 in the IPS, and 1,029 in the IFS. This breakdown highlights the ongoing need to recruit qualified individuals into key governmental roles, particularly as these positions play essential functions in the country’s governance and international representation.

Breakdown of Authorized Strength and Current Officers

A detailed analysis of the sanctioned strength against the number of officers currently in position shows a compelling picture of recruitment efforts across various states. For instance, in Andhra Pradesh, there are 239 authorized IAS positions, with 174 currently filled. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh holds 459 total posts, with 319 occupied. This data underscores disparities in recruitment success across different states, reflecting the unique challenges each region faces.

Diversity in Appointments

In terms of promoting diversity, the recruitment from specific categories has seen positive changes over the last five years. Between the Civil Services Examinations (CSE) for 2020 through 2024, the government appointed a notable number of individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) to these prestigious posts. The figures show that over this five-year period, 245 OBC, 135 SC, and 67 ST candidates successfully entered the IAS, along with similar representations in the IPS and IFS.

Government Commitment

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State, presented this information during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair representation of all communities in these elite services. These figures reflect ongoing efforts to enhance the inclusivity of the civil services by increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups, not only fostering diversity but also strengthening administrative effectiveness.

The detailed reports and annexures accompanying these announcements provide a thorough comprehensive view of the recruitment landscape, with further evaluations expected as the government continues to adapt and respond to the dynamic needs of public service.
