New Academic Block and Girls Hostel Launched at IIT Delhi

In a significant development for educational infrastructure, Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, has laid the foundation stones for two major projects at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). The projects, Academic Block-103 and Girls Hostel-50B, aim to enhance the academic environment and student accommodations at the prestigious institution.

Modern Infrastructure for Enhanced Learning

The Academic Block-103 spans approximately 5 lakh square feet, making it IIT Delhi’s first ten-storey academic building. Standing at a height of 36.75 meters and featuring two basement levels, this facility will be equipped with 31 classrooms, lecture theatres, 150 research laboratories, and 150 faculty offices. Additionally, it will include conference rooms and the Educational Technology Services Centre, along with essential amenities such as a cafeteria and banking facilities.

New Accommodations for Female Students

The newly planned Girls Hostel-50B, covering around 3.9 lakh square feet, will follow a B+G+12 structure and is set to accommodate 1,400 female students. Each room will be designed for double occupancy, featuring built-in cupboards, study tables, and universal charging points. The hostel will also boast a dining hall to cater to residents.

Sustainability at the Core

Both projects are designed with sustainability in mind, aiming to achieve a 4-star GRIHA certification. Features include rooftop solar panels, passive design strategies, rainwater harvesting systems, landscaped public spaces, and low-VOC materials. The planning of these projects has also taken the existing site ecology into account, ensuring the preservation of all trees on the site and thereby avoiding the need for felling permissions.

Investment and Community Engagement

The comprehensive project, which has a budget of Rs. 430 crores, is financed through various schemes initiated by the Government of India. The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the Director of IIT Delhi, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, faculty members, staff, and students, all of whom expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming infrastructure enhancements.

During the ceremony, Minister Pradhan expressed confidence that these new facilities will significantly enrich campus life and provide students with expanded opportunities for academic and personal growth.
