Government Expands Benefits for Ex-Servicemen Including MNS Personnel

The Government has made significant strides in supporting former military personnel by notifying the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services & Posts) Amendment Rules 2026. This amendment, effective immediately as of February 9, 2026, clarifies the definition of ex-servicemen to explicitly include members of the Military Nursing Service (MNS), alongside personnel from the Regular Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Previously, it was unclear whether commissioned officers from the MNS were entitled to the same re-employment advantages available to other veterans. This new amendment effectively removes that ambiguity and formally recognizes MNS personnel within the framework for re-employment in Central Civil Services, thereby enhancing rehabilitation and second-career opportunities for a broader group of ex-defence members.

Key Changes in Definition

Under the revised Rule 2, Clause (c), the term ‘ex-servicemen’ now includes those who have served in any capacity—combatant or non-combatant—within the Military Nursing Service of the Indian Union. This inclusive approach ensures that all former defence personnel receive the recognition and support they deserve.

Benefits Extended to MNS Personnel

The amendment grants essential benefits to MNS personnel, aligning their status with other ex-servicemen. This includes:

  • Reservation Quotas: 10% reservation in Group ‘C’ and 20% in Group ‘D’ central government posts.
  • Age Relaxation: Eligible individuals can deduct their years of military service, plus an additional three years, from their actual age when applying for civil jobs.
  • Employment Priority: MNS personnel will have equal standing with other ex-servicemen during the recruitment processes conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and the Staff Selection Commission.

This recent development signifies a critical step towards ensuring that all ex-servicemen, including those from the MNS, are provided with fair opportunities in the civil job market. It acknowledges their valuable service and aims to support their transition into civilian life. The government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of veterans and their families remains steadfast, reflecting the nation’s gratitude towards those who have served in the armed forces.
