India Boosts Hydrogen Storage with New Tech Partnership

The Government of India is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable future by facilitating the development of indigenous high-pressure hydrogen storage systems. In a recent agreement, the Technology Development Board (TDB) from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has partnered with Gudlyf Mobility Private Limited, a deep-tech startup based in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This collaboration aims to provide financial support for the development and commercialization of advanced composite technologies essential for hydrogen storage.

Gudlyf Mobility is pioneering next-generation Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) designed to operate at a working pressure of 700 bar. The company has established proprietary intellectual property regarding Type IV and Type V composite cylinder technologies. These innovations address the critical challenge of lightweight, high-pressure hydrogen storage, a vital aspect of the rapidly evolving hydrogen economy.

Investment in Advanced Manufacturing

The TDB-backed initiative is set to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Madurai, focused on creating high-performance composite pressure vessels. The technology’s applications are diverse, ranging from hydrogen storage solutions for vehicles and stationary systems to uses in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and storage for compressed natural gas (CNG) and biogas (CBG). Additionally, it holds promise for defense and aerospace applications. This project is expected to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities in advanced composites and significantly reduce India’s reliance on imported storage systems.

Commitment to Clean Energy

Sh. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the TDB, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Hydrogen is central to India’s long-term clean energy and decarbonisation strategy. Supporting indigenous high-pressure storage technologies is critical to building a resilient hydrogen value chain within the country. TDB’s assistance to Gudlyf Mobility reflects our continued commitment to enabling commercialization of strategic deep-tech innovations that strengthen India’s energy security and advanced manufacturing ecosystem.”

Vision for Global Competitiveness

The founders of Gudlyf Mobility expressed their gratitude for the support from the Technology Development Board, highlighting that this partnership validates their efforts in developing indigenous composite pressure vessel technology. “With TDB’s support, we aim to scale advanced manufacturing capabilities in Madurai and contribute meaningfully to India’s clean energy transition and strategic sectors such as defense and aerospace,” they remarked. This endeavor not only positions Gudlyf Mobility as a leader in hydrogen storage solutions but also reinforces India’s commitment to becoming a global player in advanced technologies.
