National Leprosy Day: Awareness Initiative at Dilli Haat
On the occasion of National Leprosy Day, the Central Leprosy Division (CLD) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, hosted an engaging outreach program at Dilli Haat today. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about leprosy, facilitate early detection, and reduce the stigma surrounding the condition.
Community Engagement Through Education
A dedicated Information, Education and Communication (IEC) stall was established at the venue to interact with the public and share crucial information regarding the signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment options available for leprosy. The outreach successfully engaged individuals across different age groups including children, youth, adults, and the elderly, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to community engagement. Many visitors took the opportunity to interact with program officials and IEC facilitators, indicating a strong interest in the topic.
Interactive Performances and Activities
The program featured a lively Nukkad Natak, a street play that highlighted the early signs and symptoms of leprosy, followed by an inspiring cultural dance performance by children affected by the disease. With support from the Rotary Club, these talented children showcased their skills, demonstrating confidence and fostering messages of social inclusion and empowerment.
Innovative Approaches to Awareness
An innovative Self-Examination Mirror activity drew enthusiastic participation, encouraging attendees to recognize and act upon early signs of leprosy for timely intervention. In addition, an interactive quiz assessed the visitors’ awareness levels while reinforcing essential messages. Prizes were awarded to participants to further enhance engagement.
Distributing Informative Materials
The distribution of a pamphlet titled “100 Questions & Answers on Leprosy,” along with other educational brochures, was a key component of the outreach. This material aimed at promoting behavioral changes, encouraging early reporting and treatment adherence, and tackling the discrimination often faced by those affected by leprosy.
As the program progressed, attendees collectively took a pledge to refrain from discrimination against individuals affected by leprosy. This powerful moment highlighted the importance of compassion, inclusion, and social acceptance within the community.
Commitment to a Leprosy-Free India
These activities reflect the CLD’s dedication to fostering community engagement and working collectively towards a #LeprosyFreeIndia. This aligns with national efforts to disrupt transmission, enhance early diagnosis, and ensure comprehensive care for all.
