India Steps Up for Global AI-Powered Climate Action

On January 28, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh asserted that India is poised to enhance its role in global Artificial Intelligence (AI)-led climate initiatives. Speaking at the Technology and Innovation Conclave 2.0 in New Delhi, he emphasized the necessity of complementing AI with human judgment and collaborative networks to effectively tackle climate change.

The event was co-hosted by the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) under the United Nations and the Indian Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Dr. Singh remarked that the fight against climate change demands collective action from nations, indicating that it is “too serious a subject to be left to one nation alone.”

Collaborative Innovations for Climate Resilience

The conclave, titled “AI for Climate Action and Resilience,” kicked off with showcases from innovators and startups, leading into discussions involving senior officials from India and representatives from the United Nations. The speakers highlighted how technology, international cooperation, and innovative ecosystems can respond to climate challenges, particularly in vulnerable regions.

During the event, Dr. Singh launched an innovation exhibition and interacted with young innovators from participating nations. He also honored winners of a hackathon aimed at developing AI-based solutions for climate-related challenges.

SANKALP Initiative Launched

In a significant announcement, DSIR and APCTT introduced “SANKALP” (Synergy for Advanced Networks, Knowledge, and Academia–Industry Learning Progress), a new lecture series. This initiative seeks to foster engagement between academia, industry, and policymakers while accelerating the application of research in real-world scenarios.

Dr. Singh stressed the end of isolated approaches in research, asserting that effective climate action requires cooperation across all sectors, including science, public and private organizations. He pointed out that innovation must engage with industry and markets early on, rather than only after development.

India’s Role in Global Climate Solutions

Highlighting India’s strategic position, Dr. Singh noted that the nation is no longer inward-focused but is expected to share valuable ideas and solutions globally. He mentioned that India’s geographical diversity allows for an in-depth study of climate impacts and the creation of adaptable solutions beneficial to other countries.

India has already made strides in fields like quantum technology, and Dr. Singh emphasized that AI is equally transformative. He outlined practical applications of AI in disaster management, environmental monitoring, and healthcare, underscoring its potential to improve outcomes and efficiencies.

However, the minister warned against the uncritical reliance on AI. He called for a balanced approach where AI works in conjunction with human oversight and empathy to address public needs and expectations effectively.

Emphasizing Partnership for Future Initiatives

Dr. Singh concluded by calling for a structured partnership, citing CSIR as a prominent entity integrating innovation, research, and industry engagement. The Secretary of DSIR and Director General of CSIR, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, termed the conclave a major step towards fostering AI’s role in climate resilience. She emphasized the importance of responsible research and cross-border collaboration.

The inaugural session of the conclave attracted high-level attendees, including UN representatives and senior Indian officials. Dr. Singh expressed hope that the discussions would yield actionable results that could guide future initiatives in AI-driven climate action.
