TRAI Unveils Mobile Network Performance in Arunachal Pradesh
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published the findings from its Independent Drive Test (IDT) conducted in December 2025 in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district and surrounding areas. This comprehensive assessment evaluated mobile network performance across various local environments, including institutional hotspots and tourist locations, providing a detailed glimpse into real-world connectivity for users.
The drive tests took place from December 9 to December 11, encompassing an extensive 218.1 kilometers of city routes, 7 hotspot locations, and a 1.0-kilometer walk test. These tests, carried out under the guidance of TRAI’s Regional Office in Kolkata, assessed the performance of 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies, highlighting the user experience across different devices and network conditions.
Key Findings of the Drive Test
Among the key parameters evaluated were voice and data services, with the findings revealing notable differences in performance among major telecom service providers. For call setup success rates, Airtel achieved 94.92%, followed by RJIL at 98.63%, BSNL at 34.73%, and VIL at 45.10% in auto-selection mode. Additionally, the drop call rates were marked at 1.79% for Airtel, 1.04% for RJIL, 21.66% for BSNL, and 8.57% for VIL.
In terms of data services, the IDT reported that 5G technology delivered substantial average download and upload speeds, with RJIL leading at 118.57 Mbps for downloads and 17.26 Mbps for uploads. However, the tests indicated varying signal strengths across networks, with some providers experiencing significant signal weaknesses. Specifically, poor signal strength in the auto-selection mode during voice testing was recorded at 23.19% for Airtel, 43.48% for BSNL, 17.13% for RJIL, and 51.81% for VIL.
Performance Metrics Overview
The report further elaborated on additional performance metrics, including call setup time and mean opinion score (MOS). On average, the call setup times for the service providers were recorded as follows: Airtel at 2.79 seconds, RJIL at 0.78 seconds, VIL at 3.29 seconds, and BSNL at 4.52 seconds. Mean Opinion Scores, indicating user satisfaction regarding call quality, were noted as 3.97 for Airtel, 4.16 for both RJIL and VIL, and 3.01 for BSNL.
TRAI’s evaluations also included hands-on testing at various key locations such as the Bakin Pertin General Hospital and College of Horticulture and Forestry, emphasizing the impact of network performance in public and educational facilities. The comprehensive testing methodology employed standardized protocols, ensuring accuracy in capturing real-time performance data.
