NITI Aayog Unveils Reports on Circular Economy Initiatives
NITI Aayog launched three pivotal reports focused on enhancing the circular economy across three critical sectors: End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), waste tyres, and electronic waste, including Lithium-ion batteries. The unveiling took place on January 22, 2026, during the International Material Recycling Conference (IMRC) in Jaipur, hosted by the Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI). These comprehensive reports delve into the challenges facing the circular economy in India and outline actionable recommendations aimed at bolstering infrastructure development and formalizing sectors.
Prime Minister’s vision for a Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047 hinges on transitioning towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient development model, requiring widespread deployment of clean energy technologies. As digitalization accelerates, the demand for electronic and electrical equipment, coupled with the growing use of Lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles, is paramount. Statistics reveal a staggering increase in electric vehicle sales, which surged from 50,000 in 2016 to 2.08 million in 2024. The government is targeting a 30% share of EVs in total vehicle sales by 2030. This surge in electric mobility anticipates a dramatic increase in Lithium-ion battery usage, expected to rise from 29 GWh in 2025 to 248 GWh by 2035.
As India positions itself for this green transition, the number of End-of-Life Vehicles is projected to jump from 23 million in 2025 to 50 million by 2030. Moreover, E-waste production is anticipated to escalate from 6.19 million metric tons (MMT) in 2024 to 14 MMT by 2030. These figures underscore the urgent need for sustainable solutions to manage ELVs, waste tyres, E-waste, and Lithium-ion batteries. Establishing a circular economy in these areas is not only an environmental imperative but also strategically vital to achieving the sustainable and inclusive growth envisioned for Viksit Bharat 2047.
Developed after extensive consultations with various stakeholders including government ministries, regulatory bodies, industry representatives, and academic partners, the reports offer a timely review of prevailing challenges. They present actionable recommendations designed to accelerate India’s transition towards a circular economy, thereby enhancing resource efficiency, boosting material security, and advancing sustainability efforts across the nation.
