India Launches National Surveys to Analyze Household Income and Services

The National Statistics Office (NSO) of India is set to conduct significant nationwide surveys aimed at evaluating household income and the corporate services sector. This initiative, which includes the National Household Income Survey (NHIS) and the Annual Survey of Incorporated Service Sector Enterprises (ASISSE), will kick off with an All-India Workshop of Trainers (AIWOT) in Chennai on January 28-29, 2026. These surveys are poised to fill critical data gaps and provide valuable insights into the socio-economic landscape of the country.

Preparation for Field Surveys

The AIWOT will serve as a preparatory training session, equipping participants with the necessary skills to conduct the upcoming surveys effectively. Senior officers from various NSO divisions, along with field functionaries from Zonal, Regional, and Sub-Regional offices, will participate as Master Trainers. These trainers are expected to lead subsequent regional training sessions, ensuring a consistent and efficient approach to the data collection process across India.

Objectives of the NHIS

The NHIS aims to gather detailed information regarding living conditions and income distribution among households. This vital data will facilitate the analysis of how income patterns correlate with economic activities and the returns on labor, capital, and land. Additionally, it will guide policymakers in implementing both universal and targeted interventions to support various socio-economic groups. The findings of the NHIS will enable a better assessment of how income inequality affects household welfare and access to essential goods and services.

Insights from ASISSE

On the other hand, the ASISSE will focus on generating an extensive database related to the corporate services sector across India. This survey will capture essential economic indicators, including Gross Value Added (GVA), fixed capital, capital formation, and employment, with analyses conducted at both State and industry levels. By exclusively targeting the corporate segment of the service sector, ASISSE adopts an enterprise-based approach, leveraging the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) framework.

Survey Coverage

The NHIS and ASISSE will encompass the entire Indian Union, with the exception of the remote villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are challenging to access throughout the year. By covering a vast geographical area, these surveys aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of income sources and patterns across diverse demographics.
