Transforming Education for Neurodiverse Students: Key Insights from Inclusive Education Summit 2026

In an inspiring conclusion to the Inclusive Education Summit 2026, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, highlighted the urgent need for systemic change in how education accommodates children with special needs. The three-day summit, held in New Delhi and organized by the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), centered around crucial discussions on specific learning disabilities and neurodiversity.

The final day of the summit focused on the significance of early identification, the creation of inclusive ecosystems, and the adoption of evidence-based interventions to ensure equitable educational opportunities for neurodiverse children. Prof. Bharti Kaushik from CIET-NCERT opened the day with a thought-provoking context-setting address, calling for a transition from traditional deficit-based approaches to more strength-based frameworks. She stressed the importance of responsive curricula, teacher preparedness, and increased sensitivity to the diverse learning needs of all students.

Citing sociologist Tom Shakespeare, Shri Jayant Chaudhary remarked that the challenges faced by those with disabilities stem from a mismatch between individuals and their surroundings rather than being merely an individual issue. The Minister underscored that true inclusion involves transforming educational systems, encompassing classrooms, curricula, attitudes, and learning pathways to better serve all students.

Shri Chaudhary further insisted that early identification of learning challenges must lead to comprehensive academic and therapeutic support, access to trained educators, adaptable curricula, and institutional readiness. He emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in this transformative process, advocating for a stronger commitment to inclusive pedagogy.

Moreover, he pointed out that inclusive education should not stop at school but must also establish a strong foundation for inclusive skill development and employment. This broader vision aims to connect education paths to meaningful livelihoods, uphold the dignity of work, and ensure full participation in society for all individuals.

The summit attracted a diverse group of participants, including Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSEL, and representatives from various national institutions, states, and partner organizations, all united in their commitment to fostering an inclusive educational landscape for children with special needs.

As the event concluded, the shared insights and pathways forward signal a hopeful shift towards a more inclusive future in education.
