India Showcases Renewable Energy Leadership at WEF 2026

At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, took center stage in a series of high-level discussions aimed at promoting a just and inclusive global energy transition. His engagements highlighted India’s commitment to leading efforts toward sustainable energy solutions that are affordable and accessible to all.

In a notable conversation with Børge Brende, President and CEO of the World Economic Forum, Joshi emphasized the significance of global collaboration to tackle shared economic and developmental challenges. The dialogue underscored the necessity for platforms like the World Economic Forum to foster consensus among governments, industry stakeholders, and communities.

Sharing India’s Renewable Energy Journey

During a roundtable at the Forum, Joshi brought to light India’s rapid advancements in rooftop and decentralized renewable energy systems, which are particularly beneficial for countries in the Global South. He was joined by Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Amon Murwira, Minister of Foreign Affairs from Zimbabwe. The discussion showcased India’s initiatives, such as the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at promoting rooftop solar energy adoption, and PM-KUSUM, which focuses on solar-powered agriculture.

Joshi articulated how these flagship programs reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving significant growth in clean energy while ensuring it remains affordable and sustainable. He also pointed out the role of decentralized energy systems and mini-grids in enhancing power reliability in remote areas.

States as Catalysts for Energy Transition

Further addressing the session on ‘De-Risking the Green Leap,’ Joshi stressed India’s prominent position in the global renewable energy transition, crediting both national strategies and state-led reforms. He cited Madhya Pradesh as a prime example, showcasing its impressive solar power execution capabilities and competitive pricing in green hydrogen solutions.

International Collaboration for Clean Energy

On the margins of the WEF, Joshi also engaged with Guillaume Vermersch, CFO of Mercuria Group, to explore collaboration opportunities aimed at scaling renewable energies and enhancing India’s clean energy ecosystem. Joshi acknowledged Mercuria’s pledge to invest significantly in renewable projects aligning with India’s transition goals.

Driving Growth Through Clean Energy

On January 20, during the Congress Centre’s Country Strategy Dialogue, Joshi highlighted that India is making considerable strides in clean energy execution, with solar tariffs dropping nearly 80%. He pointed out how cost-competitive energy storage solutions have become, showcasing India’s potential as a reliable hub for renewable energy investments as the country approaches its 2047 development goals.

Harnessing AI for Energy Solutions

Joshi also delivered a keynote focused on the global mission for AI in energy, discussing AI’s transformative role in enhancing efficiencies and forecasting capabilities in the energy sector. He stressed that India is transitioning from pilot projects to large-scale implementations through robust digital public infrastructure, enabling widespread adoption of AI technologies for energy solutions.
