Historic MoU to Protect Northeastern Crafts through GI Registration

In a groundbreaking move for the textile and handicraft sector, the Textiles Committee from the Ministry of Textiles and the North Eastern Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (NEHHDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today. This event took place during the North Eastern Region Conclave in Guwahati, Assam, marking a pivotal moment in the protection of unique crafts from the region.

The newly established collaboration aims to bolster the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of distinctive products from the Northeastern states by focusing on Geographical Indications (GI) registration and subsequent initiatives. This partnership is expected to play a crucial role in recognizing and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Key Aspects of the MoU

The MoU emphasizes several essential initiatives, starting with the GI registration of handloom and handicraft products originating from the Northeast. Initially, this program will target 33 unique products, specifically 18 from Nagaland and 15 from Meghalaya. The registration process will adhere to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, established in 1999.

Moreover, the two organizations will collaborate closely with both Central and State Governments to uplift the textiles, handloom, handicrafts, khadi, and related sectors in the region. This joint effort aims to foster an environment conducive to the growth and sustainability of Northeastern crafts.

Empowering Artisans and Enhancing Visibility

Beyond the initial registration of products, the partnership will focus on strengthening post-GI initiatives. This includes capacity building, branding, and creating market linkages that will help ensure the long-term success and recognition of Northeastern craftsmanship.

This initiative is anticipated to empower local artisans and weavers by safeguarding their traditional knowledge and skills. It also aims to elevate the global visibility of textiles and handicrafts from the Northeast, facilitating new economic opportunities through effective branding and greater market access.

Overall, this MoU is a significant step forward in promoting the interests of artisans and emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage within the rapidly evolving global marketplace.

With these initiatives in place, the Northeastern region’s unique crafts are set to gain the recognition they deserve, ensuring both their survival and prosperity for future generations.
