Surge in Typhoid Cases Raises Alarm in Gandhinagar

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has officially acknowledged a troubling report concerning a spike in typhoid cases in Gandhinagar City, Gujarat. The alarming rise in these cases has been attributed to the consumption of contaminated drinking water. The State Health Department confirms that there are currently 70 active typhoid cases, primarily concentrated in specific areas of the city.

This sudden outbreak sheds light on significant flaws in the city’s newly established water supply system. An investigation revealed seven leak points within the water pipeline network, leading to the unfortunate blending of sewage with the drinking water supply.

The NHRC, upon reviewing the media report, emphasized that if the allegations are accurate, they highlight severe human rights violations affecting the local population. As a response, the Commission has dispatched a notice to the Chief Secretary of Gujarat, urging a comprehensive report on this urgent issue within a two-week timeframe. The requested report will detail the current health status of both outpatient and inpatient typhoid cases and outline measures being implemented to prevent future incidents.

According to the media coverage from January 4, 2026, medical professionals have confirmed that the typhoid outbreak is a result of contaminated water. They are prioritizing early detection and prompt treatment for those affected. In response to the increasing number of cases, particularly among children, a 30-bed Pediatric Ward has been established at the Gandhinagar Civil Hospital. Patients are reportedly arriving at the hospital with high fevers and gastrointestinal symptoms, highlighting the urgent need for medical intervention.

This situation calls for immediate attention and action from government authorities to address the infrastructural issues and safeguard the health of residents in Gandhinagar. The NHRC’s involvement signifies the seriousness of the matter and underscores the necessity for adequate public health measures to prevent recurrence.
