India Certifies Over 50,000 Public Health Facilities for Quality Care
The Government of India has reached a significant milestone in enhancing public healthcare services. As of December 31, 2025, a remarkable total of 50,373 public health facilities across all States and Union Territories have been awarded certification under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS), a quality framework developed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
A Commitment to Quality Healthcare
This achievement marks a proud moment for India’s healthcare system, surpassing the 50,000 certification milestone. It highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to providing quality, safe, and patient-centered care. This initiative aims to improve healthcare access for all citizens, particularly those from vulnerable and marginalized communities.
The journey towards NQAS certification began in 2015, with only 10 healthcare facilities receiving certification. Initially focused on District Hospitals, the program aimed to ensure the delivery of safe and patient-focused services. Over the years, the NQAS framework has expanded to include Sub-District Hospitals, Community Health Centers, Ayushman Arogya Mandir–PHCs, AAM–UPHCs, and AAM–Sub Health Centres, promoting quality assurance throughout public healthcare.
Rapid Expansion of Certifications
The introduction of Virtual Assessments for NQAS certification has facilitated an impressive increase in the number of certified facilities. The total surged from 6,506 in December 2023 to 22,786 by December 2024, eventually reaching 50,373 by the end of 2025. This growth includes 48,663 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 1,710 secondary care facilities, illustrating the success of institutionalizing quality healthcare across various levels of the public health system.
India’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is driven by the National Health Policy of 2017, emphasizing the need for affordable and quality healthcare without causing financial strain. The rapid increase in NQAS certifications embodies multi-pronged strategies that include continuous capacity building, digital innovations, and the expansion of the assessor pool.
A Vision for the Future
Crossing the 50,000 NQAS certification mark showcases India’s determination to build a resilient and self-reliant public health system. This milestone reflects the guiding principles of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains at the forefront of India’s development agenda.
The Government of India is dedicated to maintaining and expanding NQAS certifications, aiming for at least 50% of public healthcare facilities to achieve certification by March 2026. This goal reinforces the intent to embed quality, safety, and patient-centered care throughout the country’s healthcare landscape.
