India’s Piyush Goyal Heads to Brussels for FTA Talks
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, is set to embark on an important two-day official visit to Brussels from January 8-9, 2026. This trip highlights the growing diplomatic and technical ties between India and the European Union (EU), aiming for a swift conclusion to the negotiations surrounding the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The timing is crucial for India-EU economic relations, as discussions were revitalized in June 2022 after a nine-year hiatus. This shift demonstrates a renewed commitment from both parties to deepen their economic integration. Since these negotiations resumed, the two sides have engaged in 14 rounds of discussions, alongside several high-level dialogues, with the latest meeting held in December 2025.
Currently, India considers the European Union its largest trading partner and key investor. The bilateral trade in goods saw a significant increase during the 2024-25 fiscal year. The FTA is anticipated to go beyond a mere trade agreement, evolving into a more comprehensive partnership that addresses contemporary economic challenges.
High-Level Dialogues and Strategic Discussions
During his visit, Shri Goyal is scheduled to engage in high-level talks with Mr. Maroš Šefčovič, the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. These discussions aim to offer strategic direction to the negotiating teams, tackle outstanding issues, and expedite the formation of a balanced and ambitious agreement.
Both leaders are expected to engage in extensive conversations to bridge gaps and clarify unresolved matters concerning the proposed agreement. This ministerial visit follows a week of intensive talks in Brussels. It builds upon discussions that took place earlier this week (January 6-7, 2026) between India’s Commerce Secretary, Shri Rajesh Agrawal, and the European Commission’s Director-General for Trade, Ms. Sabine Weyand.
Focus on Labor-Intensive Sectors
A key aspect of India’s negotiation approach, shaped by the visions of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, is to secure a deal that delivers concrete benefits to ordinary citizens. India is advocating for zero-duty access for its labor-intensive sectors, including textiles, leather, apparel, gems and jewellery, and handicrafts.
India and the EU have displayed strong political will to achieve a wide-ranging agreement. The forthcoming discussions aim to reinforce both parties’ commitment to a rules-based trading system and a contemporary economic partnership that protects farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) while integrating Indian industries into global supply chains.
