Siddha Day Celebrations Highlight Ancient Medicine’s Relevance
The Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, inaugurated the 9th Siddha Day Celebrations in Chennai today, paying tribute to the revered sage Agathiyar. During his address, he underscored the persistent importance of the Siddha system of medicine in modern healthcare, extending heartfelt greetings to Siddha physicians, researchers, students, and supporters both in India and across the globe. He described Siddha as a vibrant tradition that is intricately woven into India’s civilizational heritage.
In his speech, the Vice President emphasized that traditional health systems like Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, and Yoga, collectively known under the AYUSH framework, are not remnants of the past, but rather effective practices that continue to enhance the well-being of millions. He pointed out that Siddha’s holistic emphasis on harmony among the body, mind, and nature is essential in today’s world, characterized by lifestyle diseases, stress, and environmental challenges.
Highlighting the unique strengths of Siddha medicine, the Vice President remarked that it focuses on treating the root causes of ailments. He conveyed that Siddha offers a comprehensive approach that can lead to complete recovery and healing through its integrative methods.
Shri Radhakrishnan stressed the significance of preserving and promoting traditional knowledge systems. He called on researchers, practitioners, and educational institutions to collaborate in documenting, modernizing, and globally sharing Siddha expertise while upholding its ethical and philosophical roots. He specifically urged young scholars and researchers to explore scientific inquiries into Siddha to discover potential cures for diseases that are currently deemed incurable.
The Vice President acknowledged that every medical system possesses its own advantages and encouraged a constructive and inclusive attitude towards all healthcare approaches. He highlighted the necessity of combining traditional wisdom with contemporary science to foster a healthier and more sustainable society.
Before delivering his keynote address, the Vice President explored an exhibition organized by the Ministry of Ayush. He commended the Ministry for showcasing an extensive array of Siddha manuscripts, books, raw materials, and herbal remedies that exemplify the rich heritage of the Siddha medical tradition.
Themed “Siddha for Global Health,” this year’s Siddha Day celebrations commemorated the birth anniversary of Sage Agathiyar, considered the father of Siddha medicine. The event convened Siddha practitioners, scientists, academicians, and students from across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
During the occasion, five distinguished individuals from the Siddha community were honored for their significant contributions to the field. The event also welcomed notable attendees such as Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Ayush, and Shri Ma. Subramanian, Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu, among other dignitaries.
