India’s Science-Led Growth Journey Accelerates
The Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, has asserted that India’s advancement is propelled by science, technology, and innovation. During a press conference in Delhi, Dr. Singh emphasized that these elements are central to governance and economic transformation, highlighting pivotal achievements from the Ministry of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Earth Sciences for the year 2025.
Dr. Singh outlined the vision for India’s future growth, pointing out that innovation-driven sectors such as space, biotechnology, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing will lead the way over the next two decades. The event featured key scientific figures from India’s top science ministries, who showcased landmark initiatives that underline the government’s commitment to science-driven development since 2014.
Technology-Enabling Reforms
In his address, Dr. Jitendra Singh remarked that all major reforms undertaken by the government are technology-enabled. He attributed this transformation to the ongoing prioritization of science, technology, and innovation in national policies. He cited the Prime Minister’s Independence Day addresses since 2014, which consistently emphasize a strong scientific theme, reflecting a long-term vision.
Flagship Missions and Innovations
The Minister highlighted ambitious missions like the Deep Ocean Mission and Gaganyaan, stating that India is poised for significant milestones in both human spaceflight and deep-sea exploration. By 2027, an Indian astronaut will venture into space, while a human-occupied submersible will explore ocean depths of up to 6,000 meters.
One of the year’s standout initiatives is the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund of ₹1 lakh crore, a groundbreaking move aimed at bolstering private sector research and development. Additionally, the newly formed Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) aims to make research funding more inclusive, inviting participation from various sectors.
Key Achievements in Science and Earth Sciences
Dr. Singh also mentioned the National Quantum Mission, along with programs like NIDHI and VAIBHAV, which seek to enhance startups, research infrastructure, and global scientific collaboration. Innovations from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) showcased at the event included durable roads made from steel-slag, indigenous production of paracetamol, and groundbreaking sustainable food innovations.
In terms of Earth Sciences, India has significantly improved its weather forecasting capabilities through IMD’s Nowcasting, enabling precise three-hour predictions. The Minister praised the Lakshadweep desalination plant as a model for sustainable freshwater generation from ocean resources, alongside notable progress in ocean energy and climate resilience.
Looking to the Future
Dr. Jitendra Singh concluded by stating that India is transitioning from being an importer to an exporter of high-end technologies, including vaccines and medical devices. With the bioeconomy positioned as a primary driver of growth, he confidently asserted, ‘The best is yet to come,’ as science-led reforms pave the path toward India becoming a leading global economy well before 2047.
