India’s NHAI to Simplify FASTag Process for Vehicles

In a significant move to improve convenience for highway users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced it will no longer require the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new FASTag issuances for cars, effective February 1, 2026. This decision aims to alleviate the post-activation challenges many road users have encountered, even when they possess valid vehicle documentation.

The elimination of the KYV requirement promises major relief for numerous vehicle owners who have previously faced delays and complications following the activation of their FASTags. This reform means that for existing FASTag holders, routine KYV checks will no longer be necessary unless specific complaints arise, such as issues with loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or reported misuse. In general, existing car FASTags will not need a KYV process unless there are grievances.

Enhancing Pre-Activation Safeguards

To ensure the accuracy and integrity of the system while streamlining the process for users, NHAI is implementing a set of robust pre-activation validation standards for Issuer Banks. One of the most important changes is that FASTag activation will now only take place after validating vehicle details through the VAHAN database. This marks a critical shift from the previous practice that allowed validations post-activation.

In cases where vehicle details are unavailable on the VAHAN database, Issuer Banks will be obligated to validate the information using the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) prior to activation, making them fully accountable for the process. Notably, FASTags purchased online will also require complete validation by banks before activation to ensure compliance.

These comprehensive measures focus on ensuring that all vehicle information is verified upfront, reducing the need for repeated follow-ups from customers post-FASTag activation. NHAI’s reforms reflect its unwavering commitment to creating a more citizen-friendly FASTag ecosystem that is both transparent and efficient while also enhancing compliance and minimizing consumer grievances.
