Government Launches Campaign to Boost Water Conservation Across India

The Ministry of Jal Shakti has officially launched the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) initiative on September 6, 2024, aiming to transform water conservation into a collective movement nationwide. This ambitious campaign encourages both communities and private partners to develop cost-effective artificial water recharge systems, including rooftop rainwater harvesting setups, recharge pits, and revitalization of abandoned borewells. By merging scientific innovations with traditional practices, JSJB seeks to enhance water security in both urban and rural areas of India.

The JSJB initiative emphasizes a collaborative effort involving philanthropic contributions, corporate social responsibility (CSR), community involvement, and voluntary labor. The structures are developed through a convergence of various existing schemes, such as MGNREGA, the District Mineral Fund, and CAMPA funds, with a focus on local administrative engagement.

Innovative Monitoring System

To ensure transparency and effectiveness, the implementation of the JSJB initiative is monitored via an innovative online platform known as the JSJB Dashboard. This dashboard tracks each recharge structure using GIS coordinates, geo-tagged photographs, and comprehensive financial details. Submissions from districts undergo rigorous scrutiny through a multi-tier verification process involving district authorities and the Ministry, ensuring at least one percent of the projects are independently field-verified for quality assurance.

On November 18, 2025, the Ministry recognized outstanding contributions in water conservation with the inaugural JSJB Awards at Vigyan Bhawan. These awards celebrate the efforts of districts, NGOs, philanthropists, and industry associations, with monetary incentives required to be reinvested in further water conservation projects.

Addressing Misinformation

Recently, social media allegations suggested potential misconduct regarding the National Water Awards. Critics claimed that AI-generated or duplicate images had been used to attain accolades, and old unrelated visuals from the Catch the Rain (CTR) portal were presented as evidence. The Ministry of Jal Shakti has firmly denied these claims, asserting that evaluations for the JSJB Awards rely exclusively on submissions through the dedicated JSJB Dashboard.

Officials clarified that the CTR portal operates separately from the JSJB initiative, and any images shared there do not impact award evaluations. Although a minimal number of AI-generated or duplicate images were identified on the CTR portal, they were not included in any award assessments and have been addressed by the appropriate district administrations. The National Water Mission has verified circulating images on social media, confirming their lack of relevance to JSJB projects.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti categorically rejects all assertions of image manipulation related to the JSJB Awards. Such misinformation not only misguides the public but also impacts the morale of field operatives and community volunteers. The Ministry remains unwavering in its commitment to transparency, accountability, and addressing any discrepancies to fortify India’s water security goals.
