India Unveils Path to Science and Technology Leadership at Vigyan Sammelan 2025

During the inaugural session of the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan 2025 at the National Sanskrit University, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh lauded India’s fusion of tradition and modernity. He emphasized that the nation has successfully preserved its civilizational values while adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

Minister Singh stated that India’s transformation into a global leader in science and technology over the past decade has been facilitated by strong policy support from the leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that since 2014, unprecedented focus and budgetary allocation for science, technology, and innovation have emerged, effectively eliminating the long-standing obstacles that previously hindered India’s scientific growth.

Highlighting the remarkable surge in innovation, Singh pointed out that the number of startups in India has skyrocketed from around 300-400 in 2014 to nearly 200,000 today, elevating India to one of the top three startup ecosystems globally. Furthermore, he mentioned that India’s position in the Global Innovation Index has jumped from 81 to 38, and the country now ranks sixth in worldwide patent filings, with over half of these patents attributed to Indian residents.

The Minister drew attention to India’s notable advancements in space and strategic technologies, including recent lunar missions that confirmed the presence of water on the Moon and marked the first successful landing at the lunar south pole. He also praised the burgeoning indigenous defense manufacturing sector, which has seen exports soar to ₹23,662 crore, with Indian-made systems being supplied to nearly 100 countries.

Dr. Singh discussed the growing global demand for India’s missile and defense technologies, affirming that these capabilities are the result of significant investments in atomic energy, space exploration, and advanced research over the last decade.

In healthcare, Singh declared that India has established itself as a global leader in preventive care and affordable medical solutions. He highlighted the country’s role in developing and distributing COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, alongside exporting medical devices and implants, enhancing its global reputation in healthcare innovation.

The Minister noted India’s rising influence in scientific research, pointing out that the country now ranks fourth in global scientific paper output and third in citation impact, showcasing significant advancements in both the quality and quantity of research.

Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that science in India transcends laboratory confines, actively contributing to initiatives that improve daily life. Projects such as smart cities, telemedicine, satellite communication, geotagging, and digital governance are paving the way for new economic opportunities and youth entrepreneurship. Major missions in space, nuclear energy, ocean exploration, and Himalayan research are also setting the stage for robust growth.

To democratize access to scientific knowledge and education, the Minister revealed that significant efforts have been made over the past decade to translate science textbooks and curricula into regional languages, ensuring that all citizens can partake in India’s voyage toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The inaugural session attracted notable attendees, including RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, alongside senior scientists and academics. The Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan 2025, taking place in Tirupati from December 26 to 29, aims to bring together key stakeholders to discuss the future trajectory of Indian science, technology, and innovation.
