India Champions Traditional Medicine at WHO Global Summit
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi delivered a compelling address at the Closing Ceremony of the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine held at Bharat Mandapam. Joined by Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Minister of State for Ayush Shri Prataprao Jadhav, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s role in advancing traditional medicine on a global scale.
Speaking to a diverse gathering of health experts, policymakers, and representatives of the World Health Organization, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to developing traditional medicine into a credible, evidence-based healthcare system. Over the past three days, attendees engaged in significant discussions that highlight India’s evolution into a vital platform for international dialogue on health.
Highlighting India’s leadership, the Prime Minister expressed pride in the establishment of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar, which reflects the country’s growing influence in this vital sector. The summit’s success, he noted, is a testament to the unique collaboration between traditional knowledge and modern scientific practices, paving the way for innovative research, simplified regulations, and comprehensive training.
Underlining the summit’s theme, “Restoring balance: The science and practice of health and well-being,” Mr. Modi spoke to the holistic philosophy of health offered by traditional medicine. He pointed out that this approach incorporates humanity’s collective wisdom, cultured over centuries, to tackle contemporary health issues. According to him, many modern diseases arise from imbalances in lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, and emotional well-being, making the theme a pressing global priority.
Additionally, the Prime Minister showcased advancements in technology, which included digital health solutions and AI tools designed to enhance global health initiatives. He stressed that the fusion of traditional practices with modern technology significantly increases the effectiveness of healthcare, especially in the face of rapid developments in AI and robotics.
Mr. Modi also advocated for the scientific validation of traditional medicine, citing Ashwagandha as a prime example. This herb has seen a surge in international demand during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its therapeutic potential. He noted that the summit hosted discussions on its safety and efficacy, reaffirming India’s intent to integrate traditional remedies into global health frameworks grounded in evidence.
The Prime Minister’s speech included announcements of two crucial initiatives: the launch of the My Ayush Integrated Services Portal, designed to provide citizens with easy access to Ayush services, and the unveiling of the Ayush Mark, a certification aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of Ayush products and services globally.
Moreover, Mr. Modi recognized those awarded under the Prime Minister’s Awards for Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion and Development of Yoga from 2021 to 2025, applauding their role in enhancing the practice of Yoga both nationally and internationally.
In a significant development, he inaugurated the new WHO South-East Asian Regional Office Complex in Delhi, marking an essential step in strengthening cooperation with the World Health Organization and enhancing the health architecture in the region.
Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda commended the strong participation and commitment of policymakers and experts, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that contributed to the summit’s success. He articulated that India’s innovative steps, particularly in integrating AI with traditional medicine, are setting new standards for health research and evidence-based practices.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus applauded India’s leadership in the realm of traditional medicine, acknowledging its structured and integrative approach which effectively marries ancient wisdom with contemporary science. He reaffirmed the alignment of India’s vision of “One Earth, One Health” with WHO’s goals, emphasizing the importance of holistic well-being and sustainable healthcare solutions.
In attendance were senior officials from the Union Government, global delegates, and representatives from international organizations, marking the summit as a landmark event in promoting the role of traditional medicine worldwide.
