India Exports GI-Tagged Indi Lime to Oman Amid Growing Demand

In a major advancement for India’s agricultural exports, three metric tonnes (MTs) of GI-tagged Indi Lime from the Vijayapura district of Karnataka were successfully shipped to Oman on December 19, 2025. This marks a significant step in introducing this unique citrus fruit to another international market.

The latest shipment to Oman follows the initial export of 3 MTs of Indi Lime to Dubai on August 24, 2025. Due to its warm reception in the UAE, subsequent exports totaled nearly 12 MTs, quadrupling the original amount dispatched to Dubai. In line with efforts to diversify export markets, another shipment of 350 kg of GI-tagged Indi Lime was exported to the United Kingdom. So far, about 12.35 MTs of Indi Lime have been shipped from Vijayapura, showcasing the fruit’s expanding presence on the global stage.

Trade Agreements and Economic Impact

The export of Indi Lime to Oman is particularly significant following the recent signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Oman. This Free Trade Agreement aims to enhance bilateral economic connections and widen market access for Indian exporters. The agreement is expected to positively impact several sectors, including agricultural and processed food products, thus boosting India’s export competitiveness in Oman.

The successful dispatch of GI-tagged Indi Lime highlights the increasing opportunities for Indian agricultural products under this strengthened trade framework.

Quality and Market Promotion

Indi Lime’s designation with Geographical Indication (GI) status reflects its unique qualities such as a distinct aroma, high juice content, and extended shelf life, allowing it to compete effectively in global markets. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been instrumental in promoting and branding these GI-tagged products. Their work focuses on ensuring compliance with international quality and phytosanitary standards.

The export of GI-tagged Indi Lime from Vijayapura has not only enhanced income for local farmers but has also provided them access to premium international markets, thereby lessening their reliance on domestic price volatility.

The successful international market performance of GI-tagged Indi Lime underscores India’s potential as a dependable source of high-quality, region-specific agricultural products. This progress is likely to open new opportunities for farmers and strengthen India’s agricultural export ecosystem.
