NHAI Enhances Safety for Highway Users Amid Winter Fog
As winter approaches, hazy and foggy weather conditions pose a challenge for drivers on National Highways. In a proactive response, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated several measures to improve visibility and ensure the safety of highway users. These measures are categorized into two primary frameworks: Engineering and Safety Awareness.
Engineering Measures for Enhanced Visibility
The Engineering measures implemented by NHAI focus on critical infrastructure improvements. These include the replacement and repair of missing or damaged road signs and studs, along with rejuvenating faded pavement markings. Additionally, reflective markers and retro-reflective yellow stickers will be added to safety devices, such as metal beam crash barriers, to further increase visibility on the roads.
In construction zones, safety protocols are being ramped up. NHAI is ensuring that areas under construction have proper barricading and diversion signs in place. Solar blinkers are also being installed at median openings to maximize driver awareness while traveling through these stretches.
Raising Safety Awareness
To alert highway users about reduced visibility due to fog, NHAI has launched a range of Safety Awareness initiatives. Variable Message Signs (VMS) or electronic signage now provide critical information, including fog alerts and recommended speed limits. In fog-prone areas, a Public Address System is being deployed to broadcast warnings to commuters.
Complementing this, electronic billboards, local radio, and social media platforms are utilized for public service announcements. Additionally, the installation of reflective tapes on vehicles is encouraged to boost their visibility on the roads.
Field Inspections and Patrols
NHAI is also stepping up efforts by instructing its field offices to conduct weekly nighttime inspections of highways to evaluate visibility conditions. Highway Patrol vehicles equipped with blinking batons will be stationed in dense fog areas to direct traffic safely. Furthermore, workers are required to wear reflective jackets during their activities on highways.
Collaboration is the key to quick responses. NHAI has partnered with local law enforcement, ambulance services, and municipal authorities to enhance emergency response capabilities. Joint drills with traffic police are planned to improve coordination in emergencies caused by fog.
Enhancing Safety Protocols
Moreover, NHAI has granted its field officers the authority to allocate funds for improving safety at accident-prone locations, particularly during foggy weather. Commuters are also encouraged to practice safe driving techniques in adverse conditions. Guidelines recommend maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, driving at a speed of 30 km/hr or less, and using head and back lights effectively.
It is critical not to park vehicles on the highway, except in designated areas such as truck lay bays and wayside amenities. Drivers should exercise caution near construction sites and diversions and consider adding reflective tapes across their vehicles for enhanced visibility.
