PLI Program Boosts India’s Manufacturing and Export Landscape

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program in India has significantly bolstered domestic manufacturing, attracted substantial investments, and spurred export growth across various sectors. As of September 2025, the PLI initiatives have led to investments reaching approximately Rs. 2 lakh crore, translating into remarkable increases in production and employment, vital for the nation’s economy.

According to the latest reports, the realized investments have not only stimulated production and sales that exceed Rs. 18.7 lakh crore but have also generated over 12.6 lakh jobs—both direct and indirect. The PLI scheme’s impact is especially pronounced in the medical device sector, where 21 projects have begun manufacturing 54 innovative medical devices, including advanced technologies like MRI and CT-Scans. This progress highlights India’s strides in reducing its dependence on imports while enhancing local production of essential healthcare items.

Record Growth in Electronics and Telecom

The statistics reveal a staggering growth in mobile phone production, skyrocketing from ₹18,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹5.45 lakh crore by 2024-25—a 28-fold increase. Additionally, the telecom sector achieved a significant 60% import substitution, making India nearly self-sufficient in specific equipment. This transformation is backed by global tech companies establishing production units in India, positioning the country as a key player in exporting 4G and 5G telecom equipment.

Another noteworthy achievement of the PLI program is the substantial investment in the White Goods sector, with 84 companies collectively expected to invest ₹10,478 crore in manufacturing air conditioners and LED lights, further enhancing domestic capabilities.

Stable Export Performance Amid Global Challenges

India’s merchandise exports for the period between April and October 2025 have shown resilient growth despite challenging global economic conditions. Key sectors such as electronics, which saw an impressive 41.94% increase fueled by the demand for smartphones, and agricultural exports, have contributed significantly to this positive trend. Although the pharmaceutical sector witnessed a modest growth of 6.46%, the engineering goods sector remained the largest export category, growing by 5.35% due to higher shipments to major economies like Germany and the UK.

While the PLI program marks considerable progress in several sectors, some areas have faced declines, reflecting the ongoing global demand fluctuations. These trends underscore the importance of diversifying exports and enhancing the value chain to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Government Initiatives to Support MSMEs

The Government of India has introduced several measures to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), crucial for further strengthening export capabilities. This includes the Export Promotion Mission launched to address the challenges faced by Indian exporters, especially focusing on MSMEs. The government has committed a budget of ₹25,060 crores over six years to help streamline this initiative.

Digital advancements, such as the Bharat Trade Net, aim to enhance trade processes and reduce the compliance burden on MSMEs, facilitating easier access to export finance. Other grassroots initiatives like Districts as Export Hubs also aim to empower local entrepreneurs and artisans to venture into international markets with lower costs.

The government actively pursues Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to ensure better market access for Indian products. The recently signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UK is one such example, designed to eliminate barriers and promote bilateral trade.
