India Champions Sustainable Solutions at UNEA-7 in Nairobi

Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, represented India at the High-Level Segment of the 7th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi today. Emphasizing India’s commitment to a people-centric approach to environmental solutions, he celebrated the nation’s significant achievements while reinforcing its dedication to equitable environmental practices.

While expressing gratitude towards the Kenyan government and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for their organization of the event, Singh noted that the assembly’s theme, Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet, resonates deeply with India’s commitment to living in harmony with nature. He remarked, “This theme aligns perfectly with our vision of inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient development.”

Singh prominently featured the Mission LiFE initiative, a global movement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at promoting mindful consumption and fostering sustainable lifestyles among individuals and communities. He highlighted that India’s environmental goals emerge from the diverse needs of its landscapes and communities, reflecting a collective aspiration for clean air, safe drinking water, vibrant ecosystems, and a secured future for upcoming generations.

With confidence, Singh asserted that Indian efforts at UNEA-7 are grounded in principles that prioritize people and consider national circumstances. He stated that these guiding principles encourage ambition, build trust, and enhance cooperation among nations.

The Minister pointed to India’s remarkable progress over the past decade in achieving a non-fossil fuel electricity capacity of 50%, well ahead of the anticipated targets. He discussed the nation’s energy transition, which includes investments in solar, wind, hydropower, biofuels, and emerging green technologies, transforming India’s energy landscape. Key initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM are empowering households and farmers by providing access to clean and reliable energy while promoting public engagement in climate action.

Singh also outlined India’s extensive ecological initiatives, particularly through the nationwide movement ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ which draws a poignant comparison between nurturing mothers and caring for the Earth. Under this initiative, over 2.6 billion saplings have been planted across the country.

In discussing river rejuvenation, he noted successful programs such as Namami Gange, showcasing community-driven methods for restoring ecological balance. He also elaborated on India’s efforts in resource efficiency through circular economy initiatives and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks targeting plastics, batteries, e-waste, and end-of-life vehicles.

The Minister reaffirmed India’s leadership in international collaborations, referencing partnerships through the International Solar Alliance and other initiatives aimed at disaster resilience and wildlife conservation. Such platforms exemplify India’s commitment to South-South cooperation and empowering the Global South in crafting global environmental solutions.

Singh underscored the necessity of financial support, technology transfers, and capacity-building for developing countries, urging that UNEA outcomes should align with existing Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) while ensuring practical implementation for all member states.

In light of the increasing threat of wildfires, India has introduced a resolution focused on integrated fire management, appreciating the collaborative support from other member states. Concluding his address, he expressed that India perceives environmental action not merely as a policy obligation but as a pathway to dignity, opportunity, and well-being for all. In the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family—India remains dedicated to a collaborative approach towards a sustainable future and a resilient planet.
