India’s Tiger Population Update: Positive Prey Trends Reported

The Government of India, through the National Tiger Conservation Authority, has released an important report concerning the status of ungulates in tiger habitats across the nation, based on the findings from the 5th Cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation conducted in 2022. The report indicates that the preferred prey species for tigers are either increasing or remaining stable in most landscapes, boding well for the country’s tiger population.

To support this growth, the National Tiger Conservation Authority is providing significant funding under the Project Tiger Component within the broader Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats. This financial assistance plays a critical role in habitat management, prey augmentation, and recovery efforts, all of which are founded on an evidence-based, site-specific Tiger Conservation Plan.

Strategic Measures Against Human-Tiger Conflicts

Recognizing the potential for conflict between humans and tigers, the government has implemented a comprehensive three-pronged strategy. This approach not only addresses immediate conflict situations but also promotes long-term sustainability of tiger habitats.

Firstly, the government provides material and logistical support to tiger reserves through the Project Tiger scheme. This funding helps reserves enhance their infrastructure and capacity to manage tigers that may disperse from source areas. Each year, tiger reserves outline their needs through an Annual Plan of Operation, which is part of a larger Tiger Conservation Plan mandated by the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. This includes activities like compensation payments, public awareness campaigns on man-animal conflict, and training of forest staff.

Secondly, the government restricts habitat interventions based on the carrying capacity of tigers. When tiger populations reach optimal levels, habitat modifications are minimized to reduce wildlife spillover into human territories. Additionally, in buffer zones around reserves, habitat actions are carefully controlled to maintain ecological balance.

Standard Operating Procedures for Effective Management

Furthermore, the National Tiger Conservation Authority has put forth three Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) available to the public. These procedures are designed to manage various conflict scenarios, including:

  1. Emergency situations due to tigers straying into human-dominated areas.
  2. Managing livestock losses caused by tigers.
  3. Rehabilitation of tigers from source areas at the landscape level.

These SOPs aim to manage the movement of dispersing tigers and reduce livestock conflicts, thereby facilitating the relocation of tigers from densely populated areas to regions with lower tiger populations.

Additionally, the Project Tiger initiative generates nearly 50 lakh mandays of employment, providing livelihood security for communities engaged in tiger conservation efforts.
