India’s Tourism Ministry Unveils New Initiatives for Homestays

The Indian Ministry of Tourism is taking bold steps to promote a variety of tourism offerings across the country, focusing particularly on spiritual and cultural tourism. As part of these efforts, the ministry is actively participating in travel events and exhibitions, collaborating with state governments to organize fairs and festivals, and inviting influencers, journalists, and tour operators to explore India’s rich heritage and landscapes through the Hospitality Programme. The ministry is also deploying outreach activities via its website and social media, in partnership with state governments and Indian missions abroad.

Introducing Homestays in Tribal Areas

A significant initiative introduced by the Ministry is the development of homestays in tribal areas, as outlined in the new guidelines under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, which falls under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA). This effort aims to promote responsible tourism while simultaneously boosting livelihood opportunities within tribal communities. The initiative encourages the adoption of sustainable tourism practices in tribal villages, ensuring that both visitors and the local population benefit from the experience.

The government plans to provide financial support up to ₹5 lakh to meet community requirements, along with ₹5 lakh allocated for the construction of two new rooms for each household. Additionally, existing accommodations can receive up to ₹3 lakh for renovations, making these homestays more appealing to tourists.

Supporting Entrepreneurs with Mudra Loans

In further support of this initiative, the Government of India has announced collateral-free institutional credit in the form of Mudra Loans for the establishment of homestays, as part of the 2025-26 Budget Announcement. This financial aid is designed to encourage the development of homestays not only in tribal areas but also in rural regions, fostering job creation and enhancing the overall tourism landscape in India.

These initiatives were revealed by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, during a written response in the Rajya Sabha. This multifaceted approach showcases the government’s commitment to promoting tourism while uplifting local communities and preserving the rich cultural heritage of India.
