Deputy Secretary-General Urges Urgent Action to Protect Planet’s Health and Human Well-being at UN Environment Assembly

I send warm wishes to Nairobi, a city that symbolizes our shared future and serves as a hub for environmental cooperation. In a video message for the opening of the seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed expressed her gratitude to the Kenyan government for its hospitality and leadership. She emphasized the urgent need for nations to unite and transform commitments into actionable steps to enhance the planet’s resilience and ensure prosperity for all.

Urgency for Collective Action

Mohammed highlighted the critical moment we face, urging countries to act swiftly to protect the health of our planet and the well-being of its inhabitants. She referenced the Pact for the Future, which calls for immediate action to address environmental challenges. The Deputy Secretary-General stressed that this is an opportune time to advance collective environmental efforts, which are central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. She called for investments in stable climates, thriving ecosystems, and sustainable development that benefits everyone.

The message underscored the importance of learning from past experiences, safeguarding successful initiatives, and promoting innovations that can be scaled. Mohammed insisted that multilateralism must yield tangible results for both people and the planet, moving beyond mere rhetoric. She noted the momentum generated from the recent COP30 conference and emphasized the potential for real progress when countries, civil society, and youth collaborate on critical issues such as forest protection, climate finance, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and women.

Challenges in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Despite some advancements, Mohammed pointed out that efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are significantly off track, posing serious risks to global well-being, economies, and the environment. She referenced the United Nations Environment Programme’s latest Emissions Gap Report, which warns that the world is on course to exceed the 1.5°C threshold within the next decade. This alarming prediction underscores the necessity for bold actions to reduce global temperatures promptly.

Additionally, the Adaptation Gap Report indicates that developing nations will require up to $365 billion annually by 2035 for adaptation efforts. This highlights the urgent need for major carbon dioxide emitters to enhance their support for vulnerable countries. The Deputy Secretary-General also pointed to the increasing frequency and severity of droughts and disasters, which have affected 20 to 40 percent of the world’s land and put over 3 billion people at risk. With one million species facing extinction and 9 million people dying prematurely due to pollution each year, the stakes have never been higher.

Integrating Environmental and Economic Goals

Mohammed emphasized the necessity of aligning long-term investments in prosperity and stability with environmental goals. She asserted that fulfilling sustainable development commitments, including those related to climate change, remains achievable. However, this requires a reformed green agenda that is financially viable, socially equitable, and politically relevant. As discussions unfold during UNEA-7, she urged participants to commit to bold and transformative actions that promote a healthy planet, healthy people, and robust economies.

The message serves as a clarion call for nations to prioritize environmental sustainability and collective action. The urgency of the situation demands that leaders not only acknowledge the challenges but also take decisive steps to ensure a sustainable future for all.
