Renewable Energy Ministry Clarifies Solar Financing, Denies Issuance of Lender Advisory to Banks
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has clarified that it has not issued any directive to financial institutions to cease funding renewable energy projects. This statement comes in response to recent media reports suggesting that the ministry had advised lenders to halt financing due to concerns over overcapacity in the sector. The MNRE emphasized its commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives and ensuring that financial institutions are well-informed when evaluating financing proposals.
Clarification from the Ministry
In a recent statement, the MNRE firmly denied claims that it had instructed banks and other lenders to stop providing loans for renewable energy projects or manufacturing facilities. The ministry stated, “It is hereby clarified that MNRE has not issued any advisory to financial institutions for stopping lending to either renewable energy power projects or to renewable energy equipment manufacturing facilities.” This clarification aims to dispel any confusion arising from reports that suggested a halt in financing due to concerns about overcapacity in the renewable energy sector.
The ministry explained that it has only shared information regarding the current status of domestic manufacturing capacity in the solar photovoltaic (PV) segment with the Department of Financial Services and various non-banking financial companies. This information is intended to assist financial institutions in making informed decisions when considering financing proposals for solar PV manufacturing facilities.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
The MNRE reiterated the government’s dedication to making India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing. The ministry aims to position the country as a significant player in the global renewable energy value chain. To support this goal, the government has introduced initiatives such as the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages the production of high-efficiency solar PV modules. According to the MNRE, the capacity has surged from 2.3 gigawatts (GW) in 2014 to approximately 122 GW, as listed in the ministry’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Progress in Renewable Energy Capacity
The MNRE highlighted that India has made significant strides in its renewable energy capacity. The country has already achieved 50 percent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, surpassing its target set under the Paris Agreement by five years. As of October 31, 2025, the installed non-fossil capacity reached around 259 GW, with an impressive addition of 31.2 GW in the current financial year alone.
