Simone Tata, the Visionary Behind Lakme’s Success in India, Passes Away at 95

Simone Tata, a prominent figure in India’s beauty industry and the driving force behind the iconic cosmetics brand Lakme, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 95. Born in Switzerland, she married into the Tata family and played a pivotal role in shaping the beauty landscape in India. Her innovative marketing strategies and commitment to empowering women through cosmetics left a lasting legacy, making her a beloved figure in the industry.

Early Life and Marriage

Simone Tata, originally Simone Dunoyer, was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Growing up, she absorbed lessons on personal grooming and presentation, which would later influence her career in cosmetics. Her journey took a significant turn when she met Naval Tata, a key member of the Tata Group, during her employment with Air India. Their relationship blossomed despite a notable age difference, and they married in 1955. Simone embraced her new life in India, becoming a stepmother to Naval’s sons and eventually welcoming her own son, Noel, who now chairs Tata Trusts.

Founding Lakme and Marketing Innovations

Simone’s entry into the business world began in 1961 when she joined Lakme, a cosmetics brand established in response to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s concerns about the reliance on imported beauty products. Under her leadership, Lakme became synonymous with modern Indian beauty. Simone’s marketing strategies were groundbreaking; she challenged societal norms surrounding makeup. One notable campaign, which questioned the taboo of cosmetics with the provocative tagline, “Is it bad to look good?” initially faced resistance from her. However, her eventual acceptance of the campaign demonstrated her willingness to embrace innovative ideas, leading to significant recognition for the brand.

Expansion into Fashion Retail

In 1996, the Tata Group sold Lakme to Hindustan Unilever as part of a restructuring initiative. Simone used the proceeds from this sale to acquire the British retail chain Littlewoods, which she rebranded as Westside. This move marked the Tata Group’s entry into the fashion retail sector, and Westside has since become one of India’s leading department store chains. Throughout her career, Simone played a crucial role in overseeing various consumer businesses within the Tata Group, including Lakme and Trent, which operates Westside. Her contributions to the industry earned her respect as an outstanding entrepreneur.

Legacy and Final Years

After retiring in 2006, Simone Tata largely stepped back from the public eye, making only occasional appearances at significant events, including family funerals and the reopening of Westside’s flagship store. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and innovation in the beauty industry. A funeral mass is scheduled to take place at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Colaba, a church she frequented. Simone Tata’s impact on the cosmetics landscape in India and her role in the Tata family will be remembered fondly by many.
