India Faces Challenge as Kagiso Rabada Remains in Contention for Guwahati Test; Simon Harmer Set to Play

South Africa’s cricket team is currently facing uncertainty regarding the availability of star bowler Kagiso Rabada for the upcoming second Test against India. Bowling coach Piet Botha revealed that the team will make a final decision on Rabada’s status within the next 24 hours. Rabada missed the first Test due to a rib injury and did not participate in Thursday’s training session. In his absence, Lungi Ngidi has been brought into the squad as a replacement, adding to the team’s pace options as they prepare for the crucial match starting November 22.

Kagiso Rabada’s fitness remains a significant concern for South Africa ahead of the second Test against India. The pace bowler, who was sidelined during the first Test in Kolkata due to a rib injury, did not take part in the team’s training session at Barsapara Stadium. Coach Piet Botha confirmed that the medical team is closely monitoring Rabada’s condition. “We are monitoring Kagiso Rabada and we will take a call in the next 24 hours,” Botha stated. The uncertainty surrounding Rabada’s participation has prompted the team to include Lungi Ngidi, who last played a Test in the 2025 World Test Championship final. Ngidi’s inclusion aims to bolster South Africa’s bowling attack as they navigate the challenges of the series.

Team Dynamics and Strategy

With Rabada’s status still up in the air, South Africa is managing multiple pace workloads. In the first Test, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and Wiaan Mulder led the bowling attack. The team is preparing for a challenging match in Guwahati, which is hosting its first-ever Test. Botha noted that the conditions are unfamiliar for both teams, and the pitch’s characteristics are still being assessed. “The wicket in Guwahati is said to be a good batting track, but the final preparation could influence our team balance,” he explained. The team is considering how the pitch might change in the lead-up to the match, particularly regarding the amount of grass left on the surface.

Spin Bowling Considerations

Spin bowling could play a crucial role in the second Test, especially following Simon Harmer’s impactful performance in the first match. Harmer’s contributions were vital in South Africa’s narrow 30-run victory at Eden Gardens, marking their first Test win in India in 15 years. Botha dismissed any concerns about Harmer’s fitness, stating, “No problems with Simon Harmer’s shoulder.” He emphasized that if the ball begins to turn early in the match, Harmer could pose a significant threat, particularly against India’s left-handed batsmen. The team is optimistic about Harmer’s ability to exploit the conditions, which could be pivotal in securing a series win.
