WPI Decline: October Sees Inflation Drop to -1.21% with Significant Deflation in Food Prices
Wholesale inflation in India has dropped to its lowest level in 27 months, registering a negative rate of -1.21% in October. This significant decline is attributed to substantial deflation in food prices, alongside softer costs in fuel and manufactured goods. The latest data, released by the industry ministry, indicates that the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) had previously increased by 0.13% in September and stood at 2.75% a year earlier.
Factors Behind the Decline
The sharp decrease in wholesale inflation is primarily driven by falling prices in various sectors. Food articles experienced the most significant deflation, with the overall food inflation rate dropping to -8.31% from 5.22% in September. Key staples such as vegetables and pulses saw dramatic price reductions, particularly onions and potatoes, which fell by 65.43% and 39.88%, respectively. Vegetable prices overall decreased by 34.97%, compared to a 24.41% decline in the previous month. Additionally, prices for crude petroleum, natural gas, electricity, mineral oils, and basic metals also contributed to the negative inflation rate.
Impact on Manufactured Goods and Fuel Prices
Inflation in manufactured products eased to 1.54%, down from 2.33% in September. Meanwhile, the fuel and power sector has remained in deflation for the seventh consecutive month, with a slight decrease to -2.55% from -2.58% in the previous month. Analysts suggest that the trend of subdued wholesale prices is likely to continue in the coming months, influenced by a favorable base effect and recent tax cuts. The reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates on mass-consumption goods has played a crucial role in lowering both retail and wholesale prices.
Future Projections and Economic Implications
Experts anticipate that wholesale price deflation may persist, with projections indicating a potential WPI deflation of under 1% in November. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has maintained its policy rate at 5.5%, but the sharp declines in both WPI and Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation could lead to discussions about a possible reduction in the repo rate during the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee meeting in early December. While some analysts believe that domestic growth trends do not strongly support monetary easing, there is speculation that the RBI may consider a rate cut to mitigate prolonged economic sluggishness.
Industry Outlook
Industry leaders are optimistic about the current price conditions, suggesting that wholesale inflation is likely to remain stable. Ranjeet Mehta, CEO and Secretary General of PHDCCI, noted that soft global crude prices, sufficient foodgrain stocks, and a robust kharif harvest are expected to contribute to a favorable economic environment. As the market adjusts to these changes, stakeholders are closely monitoring inflation trends to gauge their impact on consumer behavior and overall economic growth.
