Girl Group Faces Thousands of Death Threats Amid Rising Tensions

The girl group Katseye, known for their vibrant music and diverse backgrounds, has recently revealed that they have faced multiple online death threats since their debut last year. The six-member ensemble, which has garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, shared their experiences with BBC News, highlighting the emotional toll of such harassment. Singer Lara Raj expressed the weight of receiving threats from numerous individuals, while also addressing the racist comments directed at her and the impact on her mental health. Katseye’s members have openly discussed the severe online harassment they have encountered, which has extended to their families. Lara Raj, a member of the group, described the distressing nature of receiving death threats, stating, “Even if it’s not going to happen, it’s heavy.” The 20-year-old singer, who has Tamil Indian heritage, has also faced racist remarks and was falsely reported to immigration authorities. To cope with the negativity, Raj decided to delete her Twitter account, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing her mental well-being over the opinions of others. The group did not disclose specific details about the threats but acknowledged that aggressive behavior is unfortunately common in fan communities.

Challenges of Fame

Despite their rising fame, Katseye has encountered challenges that come with public attention. Sophia Laforteza, another member of the group, noted that their short career has already been marred by harsh comments directed at them and their families. While the group understands that public scrutiny is part of their profession, they stress that they are still human beings deserving of respect. Raj highlighted the sexist nature of some comments, where women are often judged based on their appearance and talents. Bandmate Manon Bannerman echoed this sentiment, describing the impact of such comments as “terrorizing on the mind.” The group aims to challenge these perceptions and advocate for a more respectful discourse around female artists.

Success Amidst Adversity

Despite the negativity, Katseye has achieved significant milestones in their career. Their second EP, “Beautiful Chaos,” reached number two on the US album charts, bolstered by their hit single “Gnarly.” The group also gained widespread attention with a viral advertisement for Gap, which amassed 400 million views. Recently, they won Best Performance at the MTV Awards and made history as one of only three girl groups to receive a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The members, aged between 17 and 22, represent a rich tapestry of cultures, including backgrounds from Venezuela, India, Ghana, the Philippines, and South Korea, showcasing their commitment to diversity in the music industry.

A Unique Journey to Stardom

Katseye was formed through a reality show called “The Debut: Dream Academy,” created by South Korea’s Hybe and Geffen Records. Out of thousands of applicants, only 20 were selected for a rigorous two-year training program that included daily dance and vocal lessons. The group has since evolved, mastering intricate choreography and developing a cohesive sound. Their breakout single “Gnarly” has been described as polarizing yet innovative, with some critics labeling it “the future of K-pop.” The band members take pride in their diversity and encourage others from varied backgrounds to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that their cultural identities are a source of strength. Raj urged aspiring musicians to embrace their uniqueness, stating, “Our skin color, our culture is our power. Use it and own it.”
