IND vs SA: Highlights from Kolkata’s First Practice Session Featuring Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian men’s cricket team has commenced its training at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in preparation for a crucial two-match Test series against IND vs SA, set to take place from November 14 to 18, 2025. Key players including Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja participated in the optional practice session. Gill focused on readjusting to red-ball cricket, while Bumrah managed a light bowling workload, emphasizing his recovery from injury.

During the practice session, Shubman Gill dedicated nearly 90 minutes to refining his skills in the nets. He began by engaging in discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak before diving into slip-catching drills. Gill faced both spin and pace bowlers, including Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, showcasing his ability to play various shots, including sweeps. He also practiced against local bowlers and received throwdowns from bowling coach Morne Morkel, focusing on improving his technique and adaptability to different bowling styles.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, fresh off impressive scores of 67 and 156 in a Ranji Trophy match, also had an extensive batting session. He worked on his drives and pulls, further solidifying his readiness for the upcoming Test series. Sai Sudharsan, who recently scored 84 runs in two unofficial Tests for India A, participated actively in the practice, aiming to secure his position at No. 3 in the batting order. Despite his past performances, he is still working to establish himself in the Test format.

Bumrah’s Focus on Recovery

Jasprit Bumrah, a pivotal figure in the Indian bowling lineup, took a cautious approach during the training session. He bowled lightly for about 15 minutes, targeting the off stump while managing his workload carefully. This strategy is part of his ongoing recovery process, as he aims to return to peak performance for the Test series against South Africa. Bumrah’s presence in the squad is crucial, given his experience and skill in handling high-pressure situations.

The Indian team is keen on building momentum ahead of the series, and Bumrah’s gradual return to form will be vital for their success. The coaching staff is closely monitoring his progress, ensuring that he is fit and ready to contribute significantly during the matches.

South Africa’s Preparations

Meanwhile, South Africa has also begun its preparations following a challenging 1-1 draw against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. The team, led by captain Temba Bavuma, who is returning after an absence since the World Test Championship final, focused on strategies to counter India’s spin attack during their training session. The squad worked collectively to enhance their skills against spin bowling, a critical aspect of their game plan for the upcoming series.

With both teams ramping up their training, the anticipation for the Test series is building. The matches at Eden Gardens promise to be a thrilling contest, showcasing the talents of both sides as they vie for supremacy in the cricketing arena.
