Malaysia Rescues Additional Bodies from Tragic Migrant Boat Capsize
At least 21 individuals have tragically lost their lives after a boat carrying undocumented migrants sank near Langkawi, a resort island in Malaysia close to the Thai border. The incident has sparked a search and rescue operation that has now entered its third day, with 13 survivors rescued but many others still unaccounted for. Malaysian authorities estimate that around 70 people were on board the ill-fated vessel, which is believed to have been part of a larger group of migrants, primarily Rohingya, fleeing dire conditions in Myanmar.
The Malaysian Coast Guard is actively conducting search and rescue operations, which are expected to continue for up to seven days. As of now, 13 individuals have been rescued, including 11 Rohingyas and two Bangladeshis. Sadly, among the deceased, authorities have confirmed that at least one victim was a child. The rescue teams are employing both sea surface and aerial searches in hopes of locating the missing individuals. The situation remains critical as the number of missing persons could be significant, given that the boat was reportedly carrying many more than the survivors.
