In a statement, Guterres welcomed the Joint Declaration between Cambodia and Thailand, which aims to solidify the ceasefire established in July. He expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair and acknowledged the role of the United States in facilitating this agreement. These diplomatic efforts highlight the ongoing commitment to peace and stability in the region.
Focus on Myanmar and Humanitarian Issues
During the ASEAN-UN summit, Guterres addressed the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, condemning the violence and calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Guterres emphasized the necessity of releasing those arbitrarily detained, including democratically elected leaders, to foster a more stable environment.
He warned that under the current circumstances, any elections in Myanmar could exacerbate exclusion and instability. Guterres reiterated his call for a credible path back to civilian rule, stressing that the international community must remain vigilant and supportive of efforts to restore democracy in the country.
Climate Change and Future Challenges
In addition to addressing political issues, Guterres highlighted the pressing challenges posed by climate change in Southeast Asia. He noted that rising temperatures, increasing sea levels, and more severe storms threaten the livelihoods and safety of communities across the region. As world leaders prepare to gather in Brazil for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), Guterres called for a credible plan to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
He emphasized the need to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually in climate finance for developing countries by 2035. This financial support is crucial for enabling nations to adapt to climate impacts and transition to sustainable practices. Guterres’s remarks underscore the urgency of collective action to address climate change, which remains a significant threat to global stability and security.
