Department of Defence Conducts Cleanliness Drives in 5,377 Locations Nationwide

The Department of Defence (DoD) has successfully wrapped up its Special Campaign 5.0, which included a Preparation Phase from September 15 to 30, 2025, followed by an Implementation Phase from October 2 to 31, 2025. This extensive initiative saw cleanliness drives conducted at 5,377 locations nationwide, targeting various subordinate and attached offices. The campaign not only achieved 100% disposal of identified targets but also addressed numerous public grievances and streamlined processes, marking a significant step towards organizational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Achievements of the Campaign

The Special Campaign 5.0 has yielded impressive results, with the Department of Defence reporting a complete disposal of all identified targets across multiple parameters. The initiative effectively tackled pending references from Members of Parliament, VIPs, and public grievances submitted through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS). Additionally, the campaign simplified 25 rules and processes, enhancing operational efficiency. A thorough review of 59,561 physical files resulted in the elimination of 11,401 files, contributing to a more organized workspace. Furthermore, the department generated revenue of Rs. 10.01 lakh by disposing of obsolete office and IT equipment, while also freeing up 57,648 square feet of space for better workplace organization.

Environmental Initiatives and Sustainable Practices

As part of the campaign, various cantonments promoted the principles of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation. Notably, the Barrackpore Cantonment Board transformed a previously neglected dumping ground into the Barrackpore Heritage Grove, a vibrant rose garden covering 2,500 square feet. Similarly, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board launched the “Waste to Wonder Park,” where discarded materials were creatively repurposed into art installations and functional park elements. The Delhi Cantonment Board also piloted the SMART (Swachhata Monitoring & Automated Reporting Tool) for efficient report generation, while the Border Roads Organization introduced a new construction methodology using “Geo Grid” for the Lukung – Chartse Road project.

Collaboration Across Various Organizations

The campaign was a pan-India effort, engaging multiple organizations and attached offices, including the Controller General of Defence Accounts, the Border Roads Organization, and the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services. Other participants included the Directorate General of National Cadet Corps, the Indian Coast Guard, Sainik Schools Society, and the Canteen Stores Department. Noteworthy contributions also came from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi, the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports in Dirang, and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports in Pahalgam, along with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling. This collaborative approach underscores the commitment of the Department of Defence to cleanliness and environmental sustainability across the nation.

Future Implications and Ongoing Commitment

The successful conclusion of Special Campaign 5.0 highlights the Department of Defence’s ongoing commitment to improving operational efficiency and promoting environmental sustainability. The initiatives undertaken during this campaign not only address immediate organizational needs but also set a precedent for future efforts in cleanliness and environmental conservation. By fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability, the DoD aims to inspire similar initiatives across various sectors, ensuring a cleaner and more organized environment for all. The achievements of this campaign serve as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in addressing both administrative challenges and environmental concerns.
