Union Minister Piyush Goyal: India-Qatar Bilateral Trade Target Set to Double by 2030
The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, is currently visiting Doha, Qatar, from October 6 to 7, 2025. His trip aims to co-chair the India-Qatar Joint Commission on Economic and Commercial Cooperation alongside H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry. The visit underscores the strengthening economic ties between the two nations, focusing on enhancing trade relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration.
Floral Tribute and Environmental Commitment
On the first day of his visit, Minister Goyal paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a floral tribute at the statue located at the Embassy of India in Doha. This gesture was followed by the planting of a sapling as part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, which symbolizes India’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Such actions reflect the broader commitment of both nations to address environmental challenges while fostering economic growth.
Bilateral Discussions on Trade and Investment
A significant part of the visit included a bilateral meeting between the commerce ministers of India and Qatar. During this meeting, the two leaders reviewed the current state of trade and economic relations, addressing existing trade barriers and identifying new areas for cooperation. They discussed potential collaborations in various sectors, including finance, agriculture, and healthcare. Both ministers emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately USD 14 billion, with aspirations to double this figure by 2030. They recognized the untapped potential in sectors such as electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and solar energy, urging businesses from both countries to explore these opportunities.
Joint Business Council Meeting and Digital Cooperation
Minister Goyal and his Qatari counterpart jointly addressed the India-Qatar Joint Business Council (JBC) meeting, which saw participation from senior representatives of various business organizations, including FICCI, CII, and ASSOCHAM. Goyal highlighted India’s macroeconomic stability and its conducive environment for startups, encouraging Indian and Qatari businesses to seize greater opportunities. Additionally, on the sidelines of the Joint Commission, Goyal held high-level meetings with Qatari dignitaries and corporate leaders to discuss investment flows and technology partnerships. He also participated in the launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at Lulu Mall, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital cooperation with Qatar.
Engagement with the Indian Community
During his visit, Minister Goyal addressed the vibrant Indian community in Qatar, acknowledging their vital role in strengthening India-Qatar relations. He praised the contributions of the Indian diaspora to Qatar’s development and emphasized India’s growing economic stature on the global stage. Goyal reaffirmed the commitment to inclusivity and innovation, urging the Indian community to continue acting as a bridge between the two nations. He highlighted the recent elevation of India-Qatar relations to a strategic partnership and reiterated the goal of doubling trade by 2030, reflecting a shared vision for future collaboration.
