Union Minister Piyush Goyal to Visit Qatar on 6-7 October 2025 for Joint Commission Meeting
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, is set to visit Doha, Qatar, from October 6 to 7, 2025, for the Qatar-India Joint Commission on Trade and Commerce meeting. This significant event will be co-chaired by Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani. The visit highlights India’s commitment to strengthening its trade and investment relations with Qatar, a key partner in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where bilateral trade is projected to exceed USD 14 billion in the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Strengthening Bilateral Trade Relations
During his inaugural visit to Qatar, Goyal will be accompanied by senior officials from various ministries. The agenda for the meeting includes comprehensive discussions aimed at reviewing the current state of bilateral trade, addressing trade barriers, and identifying non-tariff issues. The talks will also explore opportunities to enhance trade and investment flows between the two nations. A focal point of the discussions will be the proposed India-Qatar Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which aims to finalize the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This agreement is expected to significantly bolster economic cooperation between India and Qatar.
In addition to trade discussions, the meeting will cover cooperation in vital sectors such as finance, agriculture, environment, tourism, culture, and healthcare. Engagement with Business Delegation
Accompanying Minister Goyal is a business delegation comprising senior representatives from various industries. This delegation will participate in the inaugural meeting of the India-Qatar Joint Business Council. Their engagement will involve active discussions with Qatari businesses and organizations, including the Qatar Chamber, Qatar Financial Centre, Invest Qatar, and the Qatar Free Zones Authority. This collaboration aims to foster stronger business ties and facilitate investment opportunities between India and Qatar.
On the sidelines of the official meetings, Goyal is scheduled to meet with prominent Qatari dignitaries and business leaders from the Qatar Chamber and the Qatari Businessmen Association. Historical Context of Bilateral Cooperation
The upcoming Joint Commission meeting builds on previous engagements, including the first meeting of the India-Qatar Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade and Commerce held in July 2024. During the visit of the Amir of Qatar to India in February 2025, both nations recognized trade as a fundamental pillar of their bilateral relationship. They agreed to elevate the Joint Working Group to a Joint Commission on Trade and Commerce, to be led by their respective Commerce Ministers. This progression underscores the growing importance of trade in fostering closer ties between India and Qatar, paving the way for future collaborations and economic growth.
