Tragic ICU Fire Claims Lives of Six Patients atV
Six critically ill patients tragically lost their lives in a fire that erupted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, India. The blaze, believed to have been ignited by a short circuit, broke out late Sunday night while eleven patients were being treated in the ICU. As investigations commence, relatives of the victims have raised serious concerns about potential negligence on the part of hospital staff, a claim that hospital authorities have firmly denied.
Details of the Incident
The fire started just before midnight in the trauma center of the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, one of the largest medical facilities in Rajasthan. It quickly spread through the building, creating a hazardous environment for patients and staff alike. At the time of the incident, eleven patients were in the ICU, and six of them, including two women and four men, succumbed to the smoke and flames. In a desperate attempt to save lives, fourteen patients were evacuated from a nearby ICU ward as thick smoke filled the area. Firefighters arrived on the scene and battled the blaze for nearly two hours before they were able to bring it under control.
Accusations of Negligence
In the aftermath of the fire, many families of the victims have accused the hospital staff of negligence. Relatives reported that they noticed smoke and alerted the staff, but their warnings were allegedly ignored. One family member recounted, “When the fire broke out, they were the first to run.” Another relative, who lost his mother in the incident, claimed that the hospital lacked essential emergency equipment, stating, “There were no fire extinguishers, cylinders, or even water to douse the fire.” Despite these accusations, Jagdish Modi, the deputy superintendent of the hospital, defended the staff’s actions, asserting that many employees risked their lives to evacuate patients.
Government Response and Investigation
The Rajasthan state government has announced an investigation into the fire to determine the cause and assess the hospital’s safety protocols. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma emphasized that every possible measure is being taken to ensure the safety and care of patients affected by the incident. He stated that the situation is being continuously monitored. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, wishing for a swift recovery for the injured.
A Pattern of Hospital Fires in India
This tragic incident is not an isolated case in India, where hospital fires have previously resulted in numerous fatalities. A report by The Indian Express highlighted that since 2019, at least 107 lives have been lost in 11 major hospital fires, with many incidents attributed to safety lapses and inadequate oversight. The report noted that short circuits were responsible for at least eight of these fires, and many hospitals lacked basic firefighting systems. The need for improved safety measures in healthcare facilities has become increasingly urgent in light of these recurring tragedies.
