Auto Companies Encounter Logistical Challenges During Festive Season

The festive season is bringing a surge in demand for vehicles in India, but car and two-wheeler manufacturers are grappling with significant delivery challenges. Following recent GST reductions and price cuts, customers are eager to receive their vehicles in time for Dhanteras and Diwali. However, a shortage of trucks and trailers, compounded by delays in the supply of rare earth magnets, is hindering timely deliveries. Industry officials are voicing concerns over the mounting pressure on logistics as they strive to meet customer expectations during this busy period.

Logistics Challenges Amidst Rising Demand

As the festive season approaches, the automotive industry is experiencing an unprecedented spike in demand. Companies are struggling to fulfill orders on time due to a shortage of transportation resources. The truck industry is under immense pressure, with fleets operating around the clock to manage deliveries across the country. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the automotive division at Mahindra & Mahindra, highlighted the significant constraints on trailer availability. He noted that the surge in festive demand has created a challenging environment for timely dispatches to dealers.

Maruti Suzuki is also feeling the impact, with a backlog of 250,000 vehicles awaiting delivery. Partho Banerjee, a senior executive at Maruti, stated that the company is working overtime and utilizing railways to expedite dispatches. The situation is further complicated by the usual gifting rush associated with Diwali, adding to the logistical hurdles faced by manufacturers.

Production Delays Due to Supply Chain Issues

The automotive sector is not only facing logistical challenges but also production delays stemming from supply chain issues. A shortage of rare earth magnets, crucial for electric vehicles and two-wheelers, is causing significant disruptions. Despite initial assurances of normalized supplies from China, manufacturers are still grappling with delays. Amit Kamat, chief commercial officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, noted that the demand for trailers and trucks surged after the new GST rates took effect on September 22. He expressed optimism that this surge would be temporary and emphasized the company’s efforts to collaborate with logistics partners to expedite deliveries.

Luxury car manufacturers like BMW are also experiencing increased demand for deliveries around Dhanteras and Diwali. Hardeep Singh Brar, president and CEO of BMW Group India, mentioned that the demand for vehicles on these specific days has risen significantly due to pent-up demand from previous months. While initial logistics challenges arose, he indicated that the situation has since improved.

Impact on the Two-Wheeler Market

The two-wheeler segment is similarly affected by the surge in demand and supply chain constraints. The reduction in retail prices has led to a notable increase in orders for scooters and motorcycles. However, the ongoing shortage of rare earth magnets is hampering production capabilities. A senior official from a leading two-wheeler company remarked that the sudden influx of bookings is putting additional pressure on delivery timelines.

As manufacturers work to navigate these challenges, they are prioritizing strategies to enhance production and delivery efficiency. The festive season is critical for the automotive industry, and companies are striving to meet customer expectations despite the hurdles they face.
