Secretary-General Urges Global Action to Address Rohingya Crisis and Safeguard Minorities in Myanmar

It is a significant moment as the United Nations convenes to address the dire human rights situation faced by Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, represented by Chef de Cabinet Courtenay Rattray, emphasized the urgent need for global attention on the escalating crisis, which has worsened since the military takeover in 2021. Millions are suffering from persecution and displacement, and the international community must unite to foster solidarity and seek solutions.

Human Rights Violations and Displacement

The plight of the Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar is marked by decades of systemic exclusion, violence, and abuse. The Rohingya have been stripped of their citizenship rights and face relentless hate speech and violent oppression. Many are confined to internally displaced persons camps, where their freedom of movement is severely restricted, and access to essential services like education and healthcare is minimal. Over a million Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh, which has shown remarkable generosity in providing refuge.

During a recent visit to Cox’s Bazar, Guterres expressed his admiration for the resilience of the Rohingya refugees, who shared harrowing stories of their experiences in Myanmar. Despite their desire to return home, the conditions in Rakhine State remain perilous, with ongoing violence and human rights violations making safe and dignified repatriation nearly impossible. Civilians are caught in the crossfire, facing forced recruitment and aerial bombardments, further complicating their situation.

Challenges in Refugee Camps

Life in the refugee camps in Bangladesh is fraught with challenges. Recent cuts to humanitarian aid have severely limited access to healthcare and educational opportunities, putting immense pressure on the already vulnerable population. Food assistance is at risk of running out by the end of November, raising concerns about hunger and malnutrition among the refugees.

Moreover, the precarious living conditions have heightened the risks of sexual and gender-based violence, trafficking, and child marriage, particularly for women and girls. The international community must recognize these urgent needs and work collaboratively to ensure that humanitarian access is guaranteed and that no community is deprived of essential resources.

Call for Action and Sustainable Solutions

Guterres urged immediate action in three critical areas to address the ongoing crisis. First, he called for all parties involved to respect international humanitarian and human rights laws, prioritizing the protection of civilians. Second, he emphasized the necessity of ensuring unhindered humanitarian access within Myanmar, allowing communities to receive vital food, medicine, and assistance. Lastly, he highlighted the need for renewed humanitarian and development investments to meet basic needs and support refugees in transitioning to self-reliance.

The generosity of the Bangladeshi people in hosting Rohingya refugees is commendable, but the international community must also step up to provide support. The long-term solution to this crisis lies within Myanmar itself, requiring an end to persecution and discrimination, accountability for human rights violations, and a return to democratic governance.

Path to Peace and Inclusion

For a sustainable resolution to the crisis, a genuine cessation of hostilities and a commitment to dialogue are essential. The Rohingya and all citizens of Myanmar must be included in the peace process, ensuring they have a voice in shaping their future. Justice, dignity, and a safe return home are fundamental rights that must be upheld.

Guterres called upon all stakeholders to contribute to a comprehensive and innovative plan aimed at resolving the crisis sustainably. The path forward requires collaboration, compassion, and a commitment to building an inclusive society where all individuals, regardless of their ethnicity or religion, can coexist peacefully and participate fully in their nation’s future.
