Tragedy Strikes as School Collapse Claims Three Lives and Traps Many Students

Rescue operations are underway in East Java, Indonesia, following the tragic collapse of a school building that has left three people dead and 99 others injured. The incident occurred at the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, where many students had gathered for prayers when the structure gave way. Authorities are concerned that the death toll may rise, as at least 38 individuals, primarily teenage boys, remain trapped under the rubble. The building’s unstable foundation has raised alarms about the potential for further collapses during rescue efforts.

Rescue Efforts Intensify Amidst Uncertainty

Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors trapped beneath the debris of the collapsed school building. The two-storey structure, which had been undergoing expansion, was reported to have an unstable foundation that could not support the additional weight. As rescuers sift through the rubble, they face significant challenges due to the building’s “pancake-like” structure, which has created narrow voids filled with concrete slabs. Mohammad Syafeii, head of the search and rescue agency Basarnas, indicated that while heavy machinery could aid in lifting debris, it also poses a risk to any survivors still trapped below. The search was temporarily halted on Tuesday due to fears of further collapse, but specialized operations are being prepared to continue the rescue efforts.

Survivors Share Their Harrowing Experiences

Students who managed to escape the disaster have begun sharing their experiences with local media. Muhammad Rijalul Qoib, a seventh grader, recounted the terrifying moment when the building started to collapse. He described hearing a loud noise, similar to falling rocks, which prompted him to flee. Despite being struck by debris, he was able to escape the chaos. Another student, Sofa, reported seeing many injured classmates, some with broken bones. The emotional toll on families is evident, as parents anxiously await news of their loved ones. Rosida, a mother of one of the missing students, expressed her despair, having last spoken to her son just before the incident.

Concerns Over Building Safety Regulations

The collapse has raised serious questions about building safety regulations in Indonesia, particularly concerning the management of pesantren, or Islamic boarding schools. KH Abdus Salam Mujib, the school’s caretaker, expressed his sorrow and attributed the incident to “God’s will.” However, local authorities have pointed out that the school’s management did not obtain the necessary permits for the building’s expansion. This incident highlights the broader issue of inadequate oversight in Indonesia’s construction sector, which has a poor safety record. The International Labour Organization has ranked the country’s construction industry among the worst globally for safety standards.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigations

As rescue operations continue, the community has rallied to support the affected families. Many relatives have camped outside the school, hoping for news of their loved ones. The local government is conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse, focusing on the school’s compliance with safety regulations. This tragic event follows a similar incident earlier this month in West Java, where a building collapse during a prayer recital resulted in multiple casualties. The ongoing investigations and community support efforts aim to prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure the safety of students in educational institutions across Indonesia.
