Secretary-General Urges Investment in Africa’s People and Potential at Unstoppable Africa 2025 Event
We are at a pivotal moment as the United Nations prepares for its 80th General Assembly high-level week, with Africa positioned at the forefront of global opportunities. UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the continent’s youthful population, rich renewable resources, and innovative spirit during his remarks at the Global Business Initiative: Unstoppable Africa 2025 in New York. He emphasized the need to harness Africa’s potential for inclusive and sustainable growth, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Unlocking Africa’s Economic Potential
Guterres underscored the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area as a catalyst for economic growth. He pointed out that to fully realize this potential, significant investments in infrastructure are essential. This includes developing roads, ports, energy grids, and establishing harmonized standards and predictable regulations. By enhancing infrastructure, Africa can facilitate trade and economic collaboration among its nations, ultimately boosting prosperity across the continent.
The Secretary-General also called for a green industrial revolution, noting that Africa’s abundant solar and wind resources could play a crucial role in this transformation. However, he lamented that the continent currently receives only 2% of global renewable energy investments, which he described as a glaring injustice. To address this, Guterres urged for a surge in solar and wind projects, improved energy storage solutions, and universal access to electricity for the 600 million Africans still living without power. He emphasized that developed nations must fulfill their financial commitments to support Africa’s energy transition.
Transforming Food Systems and Agriculture
In his address, Guterres highlighted the paradox of Africa’s agricultural landscape, where the continent possesses more than half of the world’s uncultivated arable land yet spends over $100 billion on food imports annually. He stressed the urgent need to transform food systems by promoting climate-smart agriculture, investing in irrigation and storage, and empowering smallholder farmers, particularly women. The UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake in Addis Ababa showcased Africa’s leadership in addressing these challenges, and Guterres called for concerted efforts to end food dependency and enhance local food production.
The Secretary-General also pointed out that Africa’s critical minerals are vital for the global clean energy economy. He emphasized the need for a fair and sustainable approach to resource extraction, advocating for principles that prioritize human rights and transparency throughout the value chain. This approach is essential to ensure that Africa’s wealth benefits its people rather than perpetuating cycles of exploitation.
Accelerating Digital Transformation
Guterres called for an acceleration of Africa’s digital transformation, noting the establishment of two global mechanisms by the General Assembly: the Global Dialogue on AI Governance and the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. He stressed the importance of Africa’s involvement in shaping these initiatives from the outset. By fostering affordable connectivity and enhancing regional capacities, the continent can unlock inclusive growth and create millions of jobs for its youth.
He urged for a global effort in building AI capacity, ensuring that technological innovation serves development goals. This digital leap is crucial for empowering the next generation and harnessing their potential to drive economic growth.
Financial Reforms for Sustainable Growth
Guterres emphasized that none of these ambitious goals can be achieved without adequate financing. He pointed to the leadership of African nations within the Group of 20 (G20) in advocating for reduced capital costs, including initiatives like South Africa’s Cost of Capital Commission. He called for a fundamental overhaul of international financial institutions to better reflect contemporary realities and support African nations in overcoming debt distress.
