The OceanDisk series includes three distinct models, each tailored for specific performance needs. The OceanDisk EX 560 is touted as an โextreme performance drive,โ boasting impressive write speeds of up to 1,500K IOPS and a latency of less than 7 microseconds. With an endurance rating of 60 drive writes per day (DWPD), this model is particularly suited for fine-tuning large language models (LLMs), as it can increase the number of adjustable model parameters on a single machine by six times.
In contrast, the OceanDisk SP 560 is designed with cost-effectiveness in mind. It offers a performance of 600K IOPS and a lower durability rating of 1 DWPD. This model is aimed at inference scenarios, claiming to reduce first-token latency by 75% while simultaneously doubling throughput. The OceanDisk LC 560 stands out as the largest SSD in the lineup, featuring a remarkable single-drive capacity of 245TB and a read bandwidth of 14.7GB/s. Huawei positions this model as ideal for managing extensive multimodal datasets during cluster training, although its practical application will depend on how well it integrates with existing systems.
Innovative Software Solutions
In addition to the hardware advancements, Huawei has introduced DiskBooster, a software driver designed to enhance pooled memory capacity by twentyfold. This software coordinates the new AI SSDs with both HBM and DDR memory, aiming to optimize performance across various applications. Furthermore, Huawei has highlighted its multi-stream technology, which seeks to minimize write amplification, potentially extending the lifespan of the drives.
These software-driven enhancements may offer greater flexibility for AI workloads, but the actual benefits will depend on how effectively applications can adopt and support these innovations. Strategic Shift in Memory Technology
